This guide is for DIY enthusiasts and homeowners looking to protect and beautify metal surfaces with minimal effort. The key benefit is a durable, long-lasting finish with advanced protection, requiring little to no priming. A potential caveat is that it's a water-based formula, which may differ in application feel from traditional oil-based paints. Ronseal Direct to Metal Paint offers a simple, effective solution for painting metal, providing up to 15 years of protection with a tough, durable finish. Key features include direct application to rust, no primer needed, low odour, and fast drying times, making it shower-proof in just 30 minutes.

Yes, galvanized metal should be clean and dry. Lightly abrading the surface and wiping with white spirit can help with adhesion. Test on a small area first.
Generally, one or two coats are sufficient. Apply the first coat and allow it to dry before applying the second if needed for full coverage or added protection.
The paint covers up to 8m² per litre.
Yes, as long as the existing paint is sound and well-adhered. Lightly abrade the surface to provide a key for the new paint.
The paint offers up to 15 years of protection.
Yes, it is suitable for cast iron radiators. Ensure the radiator is completely cold and dry before application.
Clean brushes and equipment immediately after use with water. Dried paint may be difficult to remove.
Ensure the surface was properly cleaned of grease, oil, and dirt. Remove all loose rust and ensure the surface was completely dry before application.
Ensure the paint was stirred thoroughly. Apply in thin, even coats, using a good quality brush or roller suitable for water-based paints. Avoid over-brushing.
Check the ambient temperature and humidity. Lower temperatures and high humidity can slow drying times. Ensure you are applying in the recommended temperature range (10-30°C).
Ensure all loose rust was removed and that sufficient coats have been applied. For very heavily rusted items, an extra coat may be beneficial.
Setup: Ensure the metal surface is clean, dry, and free from grease and oil. Remove any loose or flaking rust with a wire brush or sandpaper. No primer is required for most applications. Stir the paint thoroughly before use.
Compatibility: Suitable for use on bare or previously painted metal, cast iron, aluminium, and wood. It is recommended to test on a small, inconspicuous area first if unsure about compatibility with a specific surface or coating.
Care: Apply in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. Use one or two coats, allowing adequate drying time between coats. Clean brushes and equipment immediately after use with water. Store paint in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and frost.
