FAQs

What surfaces can I use Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint on?

This paint is ideal for exterior brick, concrete, pebble-dash, and render surfaces.

How many coats are recommended for optimal results?

For full protection and the best finish, we recommend applying two coats of Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint.

How long does it take for the paint to dry before I can apply a second coat?

You should allow approximately 4 hours of drying time between coats. The paint becomes rainproof in just 30 minutes.

Does this paint offer protection against mould and algae?

Yes, the paint film is formulated with an algicide and fungicide to resist staining from mould, algal, and fungal growth.

What does 'Stay-Clean Technology' mean?

Stay-Clean Technology means the paint is designed to actively resist dirt accumulation and mould growth, helping your exterior walls stay cleaner for longer with less maintenance.

How much area can a 5L can of this paint cover?

A 5L can will typically cover up to 15 square meters per coat, though actual coverage can vary depending on the porosity and texture of your surface.

Is this paint suitable for interior use?

No, Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint is specifically designed and formulated for exterior use on masonry surfaces to withstand outdoor weather conditions.

Troubleshooting

Paint is not covering uniformly or looks patchy after one coat.

This paint requires two coats for its best appearance and full protective benefits. Ensure the surface was properly prepared and apply a second, even coat after the recommended drying time of 4 hours.

Paint is taking longer than 4 hours to dry between coats or is not rainproof after 30 minutes.

Check environmental conditions. High humidity, low temperatures, or poor ventilation can significantly extend drying times. Ensure good air circulation and avoid painting in very damp or cold conditions. Ensure paint was applied in thin, even coats.

Mould or algae reappears shortly after painting.

While the paint film is resistant, severe existing mould or algae may require pre-treatment. Ensure you thoroughly clean and treat the affected area with a fungicidal wash before applying the paint to ensure the underlying issue is resolved.

The finish isn't smooth.

Ensure your surface was completely clean, smooth, and free of debris before painting. Use a high-quality roller or brush suitable for masonry paint. Applying the paint too thickly or not stirring it properly can also affect the smoothness of the finish.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Exceptional Durability: Offers up to 15 years of protection against severe weather.
Reduces Maintenance: Stay-clean technology and mould/algae resistance keep surfaces looking good with less effort.
Protective and Breathable: Shields walls from rain while allowing them to breathe, preventing moisture buildup.
Aesthetic Finish: Delivers an impeccably matt, smooth finish in a modern Concrete Grey shade.
Environmentally Friendlier: Water-based formula with minimal VOCs for a safer application.
Quick Drying: Rainproof in 30 minutes and recoatable in 4 hours, speeding up project completion.

Cons

Requires Two Coats: Optimal protection and finish are achieved only after applying two coats.
Specific Surface Compatibility: Best suited for brick, concrete, pebble-dash, and render, limiting use on other materials.
Preparation is Key: Longevity heavily relies on thorough surface preparation.

Setup, Compatibility & Care Instructions

Surface Preparation

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose material, dirt, or dust. Remove any existing flaking paint.
Treat any existing mould or algae with an appropriate fungicidal wash before painting.
Fill any large cracks or defects in the masonry with a suitable exterior filler.
For best adhesion on very porous or powdery surfaces, consider using a stabilising primer, though the paint itself offers excellent adhesion.

Application

Stir Well: Thoroughly stir the paint before and periodically during use.
Apply Evenly: Use a brush or roller to apply an even layer of paint.
Two Coats Required: For optimal protection and finish, apply a minimum of two coats.
Recoat Time: Allow approximately 4 hours drying time between coats. The paint is rainproof after 30 minutes.
Coverage: One 5L can typically covers up to 15 m² per coat, depending on the surface porosity.

Compatibility

This paint is specifically formulated for use on:

Brick
Concrete
Pebble-dash
Render

It is suitable for all types of exterior masonry walls.

Care

Due to its Stay-Clean Technology and Mould & Algae Resistance, this paint film requires minimal maintenance. For general cleaning, a gentle wash with water can be performed if needed, but harsh abrasives are not recommended as they can damage the finish.
Ensure proper ventilation in the painted area during and after application to aid drying and reduce odour.
