FAQs

What types of surfaces can I use Dulux Weathershield Masonry Paint on?

This paint is suitable for most exterior masonry surfaces, including brick, concrete, pebble-dash, and render.

How much area does a 5L can of this paint cover?

A 5L can covers up to 15 square meters on average. Actual coverage may vary based on the texture and porosity of your surface.

How many coats do I need for the best results?

For optimal results, full colour depth, and the promised 15-year protection, two coats are recommended.

How long do I need to wait between coats?

You should allow a minimum of 4 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.

Is this paint resistant to mould and algae?

Yes, the paint film is formulated with an algicide and fungicide to protect against staining caused by mould, algal, and fungal growth.

Is this paint environmentally friendly or safe for my home?

Yes, it is a water-based paint with minimal VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), making it a safer choice for both your home and the environment.

What is the primary benefit of the 'flexible paint film'?

The flexible paint film allows the paint to cover and bridge minor imperfections, including hairline cracks, across different masonry surfaces, maintaining a smooth finish.

Troubleshooting

Uneven finish or brush/roller marks visible.

Ensure the surface is properly prepared and smooth. Apply paint evenly, avoiding overworking the brush or roller. Maintain a wet edge to blend sections seamlessly.

Paint peeling or flaking prematurely.

This often indicates poor surface preparation. Ensure the surface was clean, dry, and free from loose or powdery material before application. Consider using a suitable primer if the surface is particularly porous or friable.

Mould or algae reappearing after painting.

Although the paint contains algicide and fungicide, existing severe growth must be thoroughly removed and treated before painting. Use a dedicated fungicidal wash, rinse well, and allow to dry completely.

Poor coverage, requiring more paint than expected.

Surface porosity varies significantly. Highly porous surfaces will absorb more paint. Ensure proper surface preparation. Apply recommended two coats for optimal coverage and durability.

Paint not drying within the expected timeframe.

Ensure application occurs in appropriate weather conditions (not too cold, humid, or directly in strong sunlight). Good ventilation aids drying. Avoid painting in temperatures below 10°C.

Cons

  • Two Coats Recommended: Requires two coats for the best outcome and rich depth of colour, adding to application time.

  • Average Coverage: Coverage of 15 m² per 5L is an average and can vary based on surface porosity, potentially requiring more paint.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup Instructions

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from loose material, dirt, or existing mould/algae. Scrape off any flaking paint. For heavily soiled surfaces, a fungicidal wash may be necessary (ensure thoroughly rinsed and dry).
  2. Stirring: Thoroughly stir the paint before and periodically during use to ensure consistent colour and texture.
  3. Application: Apply evenly using a high-quality brush or roller.
  4. Coats: For the best outcome and full depth of colour, apply two coats.
  5. Recoating: Allow approximately 4 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.
  6. Clean Up: Clean tools immediately after use with warm water.

Compatibility

This paint is suitable for use on a range of exterior masonry surfaces, including:

  • Brick
  • Concrete
  • Pebble-dash
  • Render

Care Instructions

  • Maintenance: Regularly inspect painted surfaces for any signs of damage or organic growth. While the paint is resistant, prompt cleaning can prolong its aesthetic appeal.
  • Cleaning Tools: Wash brushes and rollers thoroughly with water immediately after painting to prevent paint from drying on them.
