FAQs
Are the Altra Olympus 7 suitable for long-distance hiking?
Yes, they are specifically designed for long-distance comfort, utilizing generous cushioning to mitigate fatigue.
What does Zero Drop mean?
It means the heel and forefoot are at the same distance from the ground, promoting a more natural, neutral foot posture.
Are these shoes waterproof?
No, they utilize a technical mesh upper designed for maximum breathability rather than waterproofing.
Can I use my own orthotic insoles?
Yes, the provided insoles are removable, allowing you to insert your preferred orthotics if necessary.
How should I clean the white colorway?
Use a soft brush and a mixture of water and mild detergent to spot clean the mesh. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Do these shoes run true to size?
The Olympus 7 generally fits true to size, though the signature Altra foot-shaped toe box provides more room than traditional hiking shoes.
Troubleshooting
Foot soreness after initial use
This is common when switching to a Zero Drop shoe. Reduce usage time initially and slowly increase mileage to allow your calves and Achilles to adapt.
Difficulty maintaining grip on extremely slick rock
Ensure the outsole is clear of packed mud, which can fill the gaps between lugs and reduce surface contact.
Mesh upper feels stiff or dirty
Gently clean with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Ensure the shoes air dry completely before the next use.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent energy return from EGO foam cushioning
- Natural foot mechanics encouraged by the Zero Drop platform
- High-traction outsole performs well on varied terrain
- Highly breathable upper for temperature control
Cons
- Zero Drop platform requires a transition period for some users
- Light-colored models may show trail dirt quickly
- Not intended for technical rock scrambling or mountaineering
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Because the Altra Olympus 7 features a Zero Drop design, it is recommended that new users alternate these with their existing footwear for the first few weeks to allow lower leg muscles to adapt to the flat platform. To maintain the shoes, remove mud or debris after each outing using a soft brush. If the shoes become soaked during a hike, remove the insoles and air dry them in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat sources, which can damage the foam midsole and mesh upper. Avoid machine washing, as the heat and agitation can compromise the adhesive bonds and structural integrity of the shoe.
