FAQs
Are these shoes waterproof?
The Olympus 7 features a highly breathable technical mesh upper, which allows for moisture management but is not rated as waterproof.
What is the benefit of the Zero Drop design?
Zero Drop places your heel and forefoot at the same distance from the ground, which promotes a lower-impact landing and better overall body alignment.
Can I use these for trail running?
Yes, while designed for hiking, the responsive EGO midsole and aggressive tread make them highly capable for trail running as well.
How should I clean the white mesh upper?
Spot clean with a soft brush, warm water, and mild detergent. Do not bleach or machine wash.
Are these true to size?
Altra shoes generally offer a generous fit, particularly in the toe box, allowing your toes to splay naturally. Most users find their standard size fits perfectly.
Troubleshooting
Feeling calf tightness or soreness after use
This is common when adapting to Zero Drop footwear. Incorporate calf stretches into your routine and limit initial usage to shorter distances.
Debris entering the shoe while on trail
Ensure the laces are tensioned correctly across the midfoot and consider using a gaiter if hiking in exceptionally loose or sandy conditions.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Promotes natural foot alignment with Zero Drop technology
- High-rebound cushioning reduces leg fatigue on long hikes
- Breathable mesh keeps feet cool in varied weather
- Reliable traction on technical and varied terrain
Cons
- Zero Drop requires an adjustment period for new users
- Maximized cushioning may feel less ground-responsive than thinner soles
- White colorway requires more frequent cleaning
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Because the Olympus 7 features a zero-drop platform, it is recommended to introduce the shoes gradually if you are transitioning from traditional hiking boots with a heel-to-toe drop. Begin by wearing them for short walks before committing to multi-day hiking expeditions.
To clean your shoes, remove excess dirt with a soft-bristled brush after each hike. If deeper cleaning is required, hand-wash using mild soap and cool water, then air dry away from direct heat sources to maintain the integrity of the foam midsole and the adhesive bonds. Avoid machine washing or tumble drying, as these can damage the technical mesh and foam structure.
