FAQs
Are these shoes waterproof?
The Olympus 7 features a technical mesh upper focused on breathability; it is water-resistant but not fully waterproof.
What is the drop of this shoe?
The Olympus 7 is built on a Zero Drop platform, meaning there is 0mm of differential between the heel and the forefoot.
How should I clean the EGO foam?
Wipe the midsole with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid submersion or harsh chemicals.
Can I use custom orthotics?
Yes, the insoles are removable, allowing space for most low-profile custom orthotic inserts.
Are these suitable for road running?
While technically designed for hiking, the cushioning makes them comfortable for road usage, though the aggressive outsole is optimized for trails.
Troubleshooting
Foot fatigue during initial use
This is common when transitioning to Zero Drop footwear. Reduce intensity and distance until your muscles adapt.
Debris entering the shoe
Consider pairing the shoes with compatible trail gaiters to seal the collar and keep rocks out.
Loss of traction
Clean the outsole lugs thoroughly with a stiff brush to remove packed mud or compacted dirt.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Promotes natural foot posture and alignment
- Generous cushioning reduces joint fatigue
- Excellent traction on technical trails
- Breathable material keeps feet dry
- Durable construction for long-term use
Cons
- Zero drop platform requires transition period
- Bulky aesthetic compared to minimalist shoes
- Not suitable for those requiring significant arch support
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the longevity of your Altra Olympus 7 shoes, avoid machine washing, which can damage the EGO foam and adhesive bonds. Instead, remove surface dirt with a soft brush after each hike. If the interior becomes soiled, hand wash with mild soap and cold water and allow them to air dry away from direct heat sources like radiators. Because of the Zero Drop profile, if you are new to the brand, start by wearing the shoes for shorter walks to allow your calves and Achilles tendons to adapt to the lower heel height before attempting full-day hiking excursions.
