FAQs

What surfaces can I use this paint on?

This paint is specifically designed for exterior masonry surfaces including brick, concrete, pebble-dash, and render.

How much area does a 10L tub cover?

A 10L tub of Dulux Weathershield Smooth Matt Masonry Paint typically covers up to 15 m² per coat. Remember that two coats are recommended for the best finish.

How many coats are recommended for the best results?

For a rich depth of color and optimal protective performance, we recommend applying two coats of the paint.

How long do I need to wait between coats?

You should allow at least 4 hours for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. Always ensure the surface is dry to the touch before recoating.

Is this paint suitable for interior walls?

No, this product is formulated specifically for exterior masonry surfaces and is not recommended for interior use.

Is the paint resistant to weather conditions?

Yes, Dulux Weathershield paint features protective technology that makes it resistant to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, mould, and water, helping to keep your exterior surfaces looking great for longer.

Is the paint environmentally friendly or safe?

Yes, this paint is water-based and contains minimal VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), making it a safer choice for both you and the environment.

Troubleshooting

Paint is peeling or flaking after application.

This often indicates poor surface preparation. Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free from loose material, old flaking paint, or moisture issues before application. If reapplying, thoroughly scrape off all loose paint and re-prepare the surface.

Uneven finish or poor coverage after one coat.

This paint is designed for optimal results with two coats. Ensure each coat is applied evenly and not overspread. Porous surfaces may absorb more paint, affecting coverage; a masonry primer can help in such cases. Always allow sufficient drying time (4 hours) between coats.

Mould or algae reappearing on the painted surface.

While the paint is mould-resistant, existing mould spores must be thoroughly removed before painting. Treat the affected area with a fungicidal wash, rinse, and allow to dry completely before applying the paint.

Paint taking longer than 4 hours to dry.

Drying times can be affected by environmental factors such as high humidity, low temperatures, or poor ventilation. Ensure painting is done in suitable conditions (mild temperatures, low humidity) and apply thin, even coats rather than thick layers.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent Weather Protection: Resistant to UV, mould, and water, ensuring long-term durability and appearance.
  • Modern Aesthetic: The Concrete Grey shade and smooth matt finish provide a contemporary upgrade to any exterior.
  • Fast Project Completion: Quick drying time allows for efficient recoating and faster project turnaround.
  • Environmentally Conscious: Water-based formula with minimal VOCs contributes to better air quality.
  • Broad Surface Compatibility: Can be applied to various common masonry surfaces.
  • User-Friendly: Designed for easy application and minimal post-painting cleanup.

Cons

  • Requires Two Coats: Optimal color depth and protection are achieved with two coats, extending application time.
  • Exterior Use Only: Specifically formulated for outdoor masonry, not suitable for interior surfaces.
  • Surface Preparation is Key: Like all paints, proper surface preparation is crucial for adhesion and longevity, which can be time-consuming.

Setup, Compatibility & Care Instructions

Setup & Surface Preparation

Successful painting starts with thorough preparation. Follow these steps for the best results:

  1. Clean the Surface: Remove all dirt, grime, loose particles, and organic growth (such as mould or algae) using a stiff brush and a suitable fungicidal wash if necessary. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.
  2. Repair Imperfections: Fill any cracks or holes with appropriate exterior filler and sand smooth once dry.
  3. Primer (Optional, but Recommended): For highly porous or chalky surfaces, or if painting over a very dark color with a lighter one, applying a suitable masonry primer can improve adhesion and coverage.
  4. Masking: Use painter's tape to mask off adjacent areas, windows, doors, and any trim you don't want to paint.

Compatibility

Dulux Weathershield Smooth Matt Masonry Paint is compatible with the following exterior masonry surfaces:

  • Brickwork
  • Concrete
  • Pebble-dash
  • Render

*Note: This paint is formulated for exterior use only and is not recommended for interior surfaces or floors.*

Care & Maintenance

  • Immediate Cleanup: Clean brushes and rollers immediately after use with warm, soapy water. Minimal cleanup is required for tools.
  • Long-Term Care: Thanks to its protective technology, this paint is resistant to mould and water, reducing the need for frequent cleaning. Periodically, you can gently wash the painted surface with a soft brush and clean water to remove accumulated dirt. Avoid abrasive cleaners or high-pressure washers, which can damage the paint film.
  • Storage: Store the paint in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and frost. Ensure the lid is tightly sealed to prevent drying out.
