Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
- Unpack and Inspect: Remove your Boston mules from their packaging and inspect them for any transport marks.
- Adjust the Strap: Before your first wear, loosen the buckle on the single strap. Place your foot into the mule, ensuring your heel sits comfortably in the heel cup.
- Secure the Fit: Fasten the strap so that it holds your foot securely without being overly tight. There should be a small gap to allow for natural foot movement. The fit should feel snug but not restrictive.
- Break-in Period: For optimal comfort, wear your new Birkenstock Boston mules for short periods initially (e.g., 1-2 hours a day) to allow the footbed to gradually mold to the contours of your feet.
Compatibility
The Birkenstock Boston's unisex design and classic aesthetic make it compatible with a wide range of personal styles and wardrobes. Its brown leather finish pairs well with casual attire like jeans, chinos, and linen trousers, as well as more relaxed dresses or skirts. Its closed-toe design offers versatility across seasons.
Care
- Cleaning the Leather Upper: Gently brush off any loose dirt or dust with a soft brush specifically designed for nubuck or suede. For stubborn spots, use a specialized nubuck/suede cleaner according to product instructions. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Protecting from Moisture: Oiled leather, while durable, is not fully waterproof. Avoid prolonged exposure to heavy rain or standing water. If they get wet, allow them to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources.
- Conditioning: Periodically apply a leather conditioner suitable for oiled nubuck leather to keep the material supple and prevent drying or cracking. This also helps maintain its rich color.
- Footbed Maintenance: The suede-lined footbed can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap, then allowed to air dry. Avoid saturating the cork.
- Storage: Store your Birkenstocks in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use. Stuffing them lightly with tissue paper can help maintain their shape.
- Cork Sealer: Occasionally, applying a thin layer of cork sealer to the exposed cork edges can help protect them from drying out and cracking.
