FAQs

Is the ASICS Novablast 5 suitable for marathon training?

Yes, the ASICS Novablast 5, with its plush FF BLAST™ MAX cushioning and lightweight design, is well-suited for long-distance training runs, including those required for marathon preparation. Its energy return helps maintain comfort and reduce fatigue over many miles.

What is the heel-to-toe drop of the Novablast 5?

The ASICS Novablast 5 has an 8mm heel-to-toe drop, which is a moderate drop designed to accommodate a wide range of running gaits.

Can I use the Novablast 5 for walking or everyday wear?

While designed for running, the comfortable cushioning of the Novablast 5 makes it suitable for walking or casual everyday wear, particularly if you appreciate a highly cushioned feel.

How does the FF BLAST™ MAX foam enhance performance?

FF BLAST™ MAX foam is a lightweight and energetic cushioning material that provides a soft landing and a highly responsive toe-off, often described as a 'trampoline effect.' This helps maximize energy return, making your runs feel more efficient and faster.

Are the Novablast 5 shoes environmentally friendly?

Yes, the ASICS Novablast 5 demonstrates a commitment to sustainability with a minimum of 79% of its primary upper material consisting of recycled content.

Is this shoe designed for heavy runners?

The ASICS Novablast 5 is specifically designed for medium-weight runners to maximize its cushioning and responsiveness. While anyone can wear them, very heavy runners might experience faster foam compression compared to its target demographic.

How should I choose the right size for the Novablast 5?

ASICS generally runs true to size. It is recommended to try them on, ideally at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen, and ensure there is about a thumb's width space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Troubleshooting

My shoes feel less bouncy/responsive over time.

Running shoe foams, including FF BLAST™ MAX, will gradually compress and lose some of their initial responsiveness with accumulated mileage. Most running shoes have a lifespan of 300-500 miles. If you've reached this range, it might be time to consider a new pair.

I'm experiencing discomfort or rubbing in certain areas.

First, check your lacing technique. Experiment with different lacing patterns to alleviate pressure points. Ensure your socks are appropriate for running and fit well. If the issue persists, verify that the shoe size and width are correct for your foot. Consider trying on the next half-size up or a wider fit if available.

The shoe feels unstable, especially on turns.

While the Novablast 5 offers cushioning and safety, its maximalist design can feel different. Ensure your foot is properly secured with the laces. This shoe is primarily designed for neutral runners; if you require significant stability control, this model might not be the best fit for your biomechanics. Focus on running on smooth road surfaces where its design is most effective.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Exceptional energy return and bounce from FF BLAST™ MAX foam.
  • Very lightweight design promotes speed and reduces fatigue.
  • Plush cushioning provides a comfortable and soft ride over long distances.
  • Reliable and dynamic performance suitable for various types of road runs.
  • High-grip outsole offers excellent traction and safety.
  • Significant use of recycled materials in the upper for sustainability.

Cons

  • Maximalist midsole design may not appeal to all runners.
  • Primarily designed for road running, less ideal for rugged terrains.
  • Optimized for medium-weight runners, potentially less suited for very light or heavy individuals.
  • The 8mm heel-to-toe drop might not suit all stride preferences.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup

The ASICS Novablast 5 requires no complex setup. Simply unbox, lace them up, and adjust the fit to your comfort. The traditional lace-up closure allows for a customizable and secure fit. Ensure the laces are snug but not overtightened to prevent pressure points and allow for natural foot flex during your run.

Compatibility

  • Runner Type: Best suited for medium-weight runners with a neutral gait.
  • Terrain: Optimally designed for road running surfaces. While the outsole offers good grip, it's not intended for technical trails or off-road conditions.
  • Running Style: Ideal for those seeking a highly cushioned, energetic, and responsive ride, suitable for daily training, tempo runs, and race day.

Care

To ensure the longevity and performance of your ASICS Novablast 5, follow these care guidelines:

  • Cleaning: After runs, especially in dirty or muddy conditions, gently clean the mesh upper with a soft brush or damp cloth. Use mild soap if necessary. Avoid harsh detergents or machine washing, which can damage materials and adhesives.
  • Drying: Always allow your shoes to air dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight or using artificial heat sources like radiators or tumble dryers, as this can cause materials to shrink or degrade.
  • Storage: Store your shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use. Stuffing them lightly with newspaper can help absorb moisture and maintain their shape.
  • Rotation: If you run frequently, consider rotating your Novablast 5 with another pair of running shoes. This allows the foam to fully recover between runs and can extend the lifespan of both pairs.
