Product Information
Full details
The HOKA Torrent 4 is designed for female hikers and trail runners who prioritize a plush, responsive ride on uneven terrain. These shoes offer a significant upgrade in cushioning and stability compared to previous models, making them an ideal choice for long-distance trail excursions. While the increased stack height provides superior comfort and energy return, users should note that the higher profile may feel less grounded than minimalist trail footwear.

FAQs
Are the Torrent 4s waterproof?
No, the Torrent 4 is designed for breathability and moisture management rather than complete waterproofing.
Can I use these for road running?
While they can handle occasional pavement, they are specifically engineered with 5mm lugs for trail traction and will wear down more quickly on hard, paved surfaces.
How should I wash them?
Hand wash with cold water and mild soap. Avoid the washing machine and dryer, as extreme heat can deform the midsole foam.
Do these provide arch support?
The Active Foot Frame design provides inherent stability and structural support that cradles the foot.
What is the lug depth?
The Torrent 4 features 5mm lugs designed for aggressive traction.
Are these true to size?
HOKA shoes generally follow standard athletic sizing, but it is recommended to allow for a thumb's width of space at the front for downhill comfort.
Troubleshooting
Feeling discomfort in the arch area
Check your lacing tension; try a 'runner's loop' to better secure the heel and redistribute pressure across the midfoot.
Debris entering the shoe while hiking
Consider pairing these with gaiters if you are traversing sandy or gravel-heavy trails.
Outsole wearing down prematurely
Ensure you are using the shoes primarily on soft or mixed trail surfaces rather than extended periods of pavement, as high-abrasion rubber wears faster on asphalt.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Superior impact protection due to the updated midsole
- Enhanced traction from the aggressive 5mm lug design
- Secure fit provided by the Active Foot Frame
- High-abrasion rubber increases the lifespan of the outsole
Cons
- Increased stack height might reduce ground feel
- Design is optimized for specific technical trail use
- May feel bulky to users accustomed to lightweight, low-profile shoes
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the longevity of your HOKA Torrent 4 hiking shoes, follow these recommendations:
- Break-in Period: Wear the shoes for short walks on flat surfaces before taking them on a technical mountain trek to allow the upper and midsole to adapt to your foot shape.
- Cleaning: Remove loose dirt after every hike using a soft-bristled brush. If heavily soiled, clean with mild soap and cold water, then air dry away from direct heat sources like radiators or sunlight, which can damage the foam.
- Fit: Ensure you are wearing appropriate moisture-wicking hiking socks. The Active Foot Frame should feel snug around the heel and midfoot without creating pressure points.
