Product Information
Full details
The HOKA Torrent 4 is designed for female hikers and trail runners who require a lightweight, agile shoe that does not sacrifice cushioning for performance. It offers a superior balance of comfort and traction, making it ideal for technical terrain and long-distance adventures. While it excels in versatility, users should note that the increased stack height is specifically engineered for those who prefer a plush, highly-cushioned feel underfoot rather than a minimal, ground-feel experience.

FAQs
Are these shoes waterproof?
The Torrent 4 is designed for maximum breathability, meaning it is not waterproof and will allow water to drain out after stream crossings.
Is the sizing true to fit?
HOKA sizing is generally consistent with standard athletic footwear, but we recommend trying them on with the socks you plan to hike in.
Can I use these for road running?
While the cushioning is excellent, the 5mm aggressive lugs are designed for dirt and trail; using them extensively on pavement will cause the lugs to wear down prematurely.
What does the Active Foot Frame do?
It acts like a bucket seat, cradling your heel and foot securely in the midsole to provide stability without needing stiff structural posts.
How do I know if the size UK 5 is right for me?
You should have about a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe to account for foot swelling during long hikes.
Troubleshooting
Feeling instability on side-hills
Ensure the laces are snug through the midfoot to leverage the Active Foot Frame technology.
Debris getting inside the shoe
Consider wearing gaiters, as the lightweight mesh upper is designed for breathability and can allow fine sand to pass through.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Significantly lighter build compared to standard hiking shoes
- Excellent traction on technical and uneven surfaces
- High level of underfoot cushioning for fatigue reduction
- Secure lockdown provided by the Active Foot Frame
Cons
- Increased stack height may feel less stable to those used to minimalist shoes
- Specific fit profile may not suit every foot shape
- Lighter materials may show wear faster than heavy-duty leather boots
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the best experience, break the shoes in on shorter, flatter trails before attempting long, steep hikes.
Compatibility: The Torrent 4 is a neutral trail shoe; if you use custom orthotics, ensure they are compatible with the existing sockliner.
Care Instructions:
- After muddy excursions, allow the shoes to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources like radiators, which can deform the midsole.
- Use a soft-bristled brush to remove dried dirt from the lugs to maintain traction.
- Remove the sockliner if it becomes saturated to speed up the drying process.
- Avoid machine washing or drying, as these can compromise the adhesives and cushioning properties.
