Setup, Compatibility & Care
Preparation is Key:
- Assess Damage: Probe the wood to identify the full extent of decay.
- Remove Decay: Cut out any badly decayed or soft wood.
- Clean Area: Remove paint, varnish, dirt, or loose material from the repair area and a 25-50mm (1-2 inch) border around it.
- Dry Wood: Ensure the wood is thoroughly dry before proceeding.
- Preserve (Optional): For best results, pre-treat the repair area with an appropriate Cuprinol wood preserver and let it dry.
- Anchorage (for deep holes > 25mm): Fix screws into the bottom of deep holes, leaving heads and stems exposed inside to improve filler anchorage.
Mixing and Application:
- Only mix an amount you can use within 10 minutes.
- On a hard surface (like the product lid), mix filler and catalyst paste. Use a spatula or putty knife.
- Ratio: A golf ball size of filler to a 40mm (1.5 inch) thread of catalyst paste.
- Mix thoroughly until uniform in color and no streaks remain. *Caution: Too much catalyst can cause excessive heat and rapid drying.*
- Apply a thin coat, pressing well for adhesion. Fill the remainder of the hole, leaving slightly proud for smoothing.
- Allow to set hard (approx. 30 minutes).
- Smooth using sandpaper or a file.
Finishing:
The repair can be painted or woodstained once fully hardened. A slight tackiness may occur on the surface but will not affect smoothing or finishing. Test finishes in an inconspicuous area first to ensure satisfaction.
Tool Cleaning:
Remove as much product as possible from application tools immediately after use. Clean remaining residue with brush cleaner.
Compatibility:
Suitable for use on sound wood, indoors and outdoors. Accepts most paints and woodstains. Ensure chosen color is the closest match to the wood.
