Product Information

Full details

Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler is designed for DIY enthusiasts and professionals tackling significant wood repairs, offering a durable, weather-resistant solution for holes of any size or depth. Its fast-setting, non-shrinking formula allows for quick work, but a key caveat is the short 10-minute working time, requiring efficient mixing and application. This filler can be screwed, sanded, filled, and painted after drying, making it suitable for both interior and exterior use on furniture, decking, fences, and sheds, especially for repairing damage caused by wet rot or for major joinery repairs.

Troubleshooting

Filler does not harden

Ensure the correct ratio of filler to catalyst was used. Check the expiration date of the product. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before application.

Filler cracks or shrinks excessively

Ensure all decayed wood was removed and the underlying surface is sound. For very deep holes, consider filling in layers or using screws for mechanical anchorage. Ensure the wood is completely dry before application.

Difficulty sanding the filler

Allow the filler to cure fully for the recommended 30 minutes or longer in cold conditions. Ensure you are using appropriate grit sandpaper.

Uneven color after staining/painting

Wood fillers can absorb finishes differently than natural wood. Conduct a test patch in an inconspicuous area with your chosen finish before applying to the entire repair. Ensure the filler is completely dry and smooth before applying the finish.

Filler is too hard to work with quickly

Ensure you are mixing the correct proportions of filler and catalyst. Too much catalyst will cause it to set extremely fast. Mix only small batches that can be used within the 10-minute working time.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Fills holes of any size or depth.
  • Fast setting and dries within 30 minutes.
  • Weather-resistant for outdoor use.
  • Can be drilled, screwed, sanded, and painted.
  • Resists shrinking, splitting, and cracking.

Cons

  • Short 10-minute working time requires quick application.
  • Solvent-based, requiring appropriate ventilation and cleanup.
  • May require pre-treatment with wood hardener for wet rot repairs.
  • Surface may be slightly tacky before smoothing, though this doesn't affect finishing.
  • Color matching can be influenced by wood type and finishing application.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Preparation: Before applying, identify and remove all decayed wood. Clean the repair area of paint, varnish, dirt, and loose material for 25-50mm around the damage. If the wood is damp, allow it to dry thoroughly. For best results on decayed wood, pre-treat with an appropriate Cuprinol wood preserver and allow it to dry. To improve anchorage in deep holes (over 25mm), insert screws into the bottom of the hole with heads and stems exposed.

Mixing: Only mix an amount that can be used within 10 minutes. On a hard surface, combine the filler and catalyst paste. A good starting ratio is a golf ball-sized amount of filler to a 40mm thread of catalyst paste. Mix thoroughly until uniform in color, ensuring no streaks remain.

Application: Apply a thin initial coat, pressing firmly for adhesion. Fill the remainder of the hole, leaving it slightly proud for subsequent smoothing. Allow approximately 30 minutes to set hard.

Finishing: Once dry, the filler can be sanded, filed, drilled, screwed, or nailed. It is ready to be painted, varnished, or stained. Note that some tackiness may occur on the surface before smoothing, but this does not impede finishing. Test your chosen paint or woodstain on a small area first for satisfaction.

Tool Cleaning: Remove as much product as possible from application tools immediately after use. Clean remaining residue with a suitable brush cleaner.

Compatibility: Suitable for use on sound wood (furniture, panelling) and for repairing wet rot damage and major joinery repairs. It accepts paints and woodstains, including Cuprinol and Dulux Trade Woodstains. Use indoors and outdoors.
