FAQs

Can this paint be used in bathrooms?

This paint is designed for standard interior walls and ceilings; it is not recommended for high-humidity areas like bathrooms.

How long does it take to dry?

Johnstone's Matt Emulsion is a quick-drying formula, typically touch-dry within a few hours depending on room temperature and humidity.

Is this paint washable?

Because it is a matte finish, it is less resistant to scrubbing than gloss or silk paints. Use a soft, damp cloth for light cleaning only.

Do I need a primer?

If you are painting onto fresh plaster or a porous surface, a mist coat or primer is highly recommended for the best adhesion.

Can I use this on wood?

This product is formulated for walls and ceilings; it is not suitable for wood surfaces, which require a specialized wood paint.

Troubleshooting

Streaky finish after drying

Ensure the surface was primed properly and avoid over-working the paint with the roller.

Paint not sticking to the wall

Check that the surface is free of grease, dust, or moisture before application.

Color variation between coats

Stir the paint thoroughly before and during use to keep pigments evenly distributed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Delivers a sleek, non-reflective appearance
Easy to apply for both professionals and DIYers
Dries rapidly for efficient room turnaround
High-quality concentrated pigment

Cons

Matte finish may show scuffs more easily than satin
Not intended for high-moisture areas like bathrooms
Limited wipeability compared to gloss alternatives

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Before beginning, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose paint or dust. For new plaster, a mist coat may be required to prevent the paint from soaking in too quickly. Stir the paint thoroughly before use to ensure the pigments are properly mixed. Application is best performed in temperatures between 10C and 25C. To clean tools after use, wash brushes and rollers with warm water and soap while the paint is still wet. Store the container in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly sealed to prevent the paint from drying out.
