FAQs

Are these sandals waterproof?

No, while the upper material is durable, the cork and leather components can be damaged by prolonged exposure to water.

What is Birko-Flor?

Birko-Flor is a hypoallergenic, easy-care PVC plastic with a soft fleece lining, designed to be durable and skin-friendly.

How should the sandal fit?

Your toes should not touch the front rim while walking, and your heel should rest comfortably in the heel cup.

Can I replace the footbed?

While professional cobblers can sometimes perform repairs, the footbed is designed to be an integral, permanent part of the sandal.

Are these suitable for people with flat feet?

Many users with flat feet find the anatomical arch support of the Birkenstock footbed helpful, but consult a professional if you have specific medical requirements.

How do I clean the leather insole?

Use a soft brush to remove dirt and wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the leather.

Troubleshooting

The sandals feel stiff or uncomfortable initially.

This is normal for new cork footbeds. Wear them for short intervals indoors to allow the material to soften and mold to your feet.

The cork edge is starting to look dull or dry.

Apply a specifically formulated Birkenstock cork sealer to the exposed cork edges to restore the protective seal.

Buckle feels loose over time.

Ensure the prong is firmly seated in the eyelet. If the strap material stretches, you can use a leather punch to create an additional hole for a tighter fit.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Minimalist and versatile design for many outfits
High-quality materials ensure long-term durability
Excellent arch support for all-day comfort
Easy to adjust with the classic metal buckle
Lightweight construction prevents foot fatigue

Cons

Requires a break-in period before maximum comfort is achieved
One-strap design offers less lateral stability than multi-strap models
Cork footbed should be kept away from excessive water exposure

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To begin using your Madrid sandals, loosen the strap completely, place your foot on the footbed, and tighten the buckle until the sandal is secure but not restrictive.

Care Instructions:

Upper Maintenance: Wipe the Birko-Flor material with a damp, soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals.
Cork Protection: If the cork edge appears dry, you can apply a thin coat of cork sealer to prevent cracking.
Moisture Control: Avoid submerging the sandals in water. If they become wet, let them air dry slowly away from direct heat sources like radiators or sunlight.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place when not in use to maintain the integrity of the footbed materials.
