Product Information

Full details

The North Face Nuptse 1996 Jacket is a legendary puffer designed for individuals seeking reliable warmth in cold, urban or outdoor environments. It features high-quality 700-fill goose down insulation and a durable, water-repellent recycled nylon ripstop shell that protects against light moisture. While its iconic boxy silhouette provides excellent comfort and thermal efficiency, users should be aware that its bulky design may not layer comfortably under extremely slim-fit hardshell jackets.

FAQs

Is the Nuptse 1996 waterproof?

It is water-repellent, meaning it can handle light rain and snow, but it is not seam-sealed or fully waterproof.

Can I machine wash this jacket?

Yes, it is machine washable. Please use a gentle cycle with cold water and specialized down detergent.

Does it come with a hood?

Yes, it includes a stowable hood that packs neatly into the collar.

Is 700-fill down warm enough for sub-zero temperatures?

Yes, 700-fill down is highly insulating and suitable for most cold-weather conditions, especially when layered correctly.

What does the fit feel like?

The 1996 version features a classic, boxy, and slightly oversized fit.

Where is the logo located?

The logo is embroidered on the chest and the back shoulder.

Troubleshooting

The jacket feels flat after storage.

Tumble dry on low heat with dryer balls to break up clumps and restore loft to the down.

Water is soaking into the fabric.

The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish may have worn off. Apply a fabric-safe DWR re-proofer spray.

Feathers are poking through the seams.

This is normal for down products. Gently pull the feather back into the jacket from the inside rather than pulling it out.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio
Iconic, timeless aesthetic
High-quality, durable materials
Compact stowable hood design

Cons

Boxy fit may be too loose for some
Not intended for heavy, prolonged rain exposure
Can be difficult to layer underneath tighter coats

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure your jacket retains its loft and performance, follow these care guidelines:

Washing: Use a front-loading washing machine on a gentle cycle with a dedicated down cleaner.
Drying: Tumble dry on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help redistribute the down feathers and regain loft.
Storage: Hang the jacket in a cool, dry place when not in use; avoid storing it compressed for long periods as this can damage the down clusters.
Compatibility: The jacket is designed for standard layering. When pairing with packs, note that the ripstop fabric is durable, but sharp objects should be avoided to prevent punctures.
