Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
The Nike Pegasus Trail 5 GORE-TEX Trainers are designed for immediate use right out of the box.
- Lacing: Ensure laces are tied securely but not too tightly, allowing for comfortable movement and preventing slippage. Experiment with different lacing patterns if you experience pressure points.
- Break-In: While generally comfortable from the start, allow for a few shorter runs to fully break in the shoes and adapt to their feel, especially the high ankle cuff.
Compatibility
- Terrain: Best suited for varied off-road terrains including dirt paths, gravel, rocky trails, and muddy conditions.
- Weather: Designed specifically for wet and damp weather thanks to the GORE-TEX membrane. Also performs well in dry conditions.
- Activity: Ideal for trail running, hiking, fast-packing, and general outdoor activities where waterproofing and traction are key.
- Socks: For optimal comfort and moisture management with GORE-TEX shoes, consider wearing synthetic or merino wool running socks. Avoid cotton socks, which can retain moisture.
Care
Proper care will extend the life and performance of your trainers, especially the GORE-TEX membrane.
- Cleaning:
- After use, especially in muddy conditions, gently brush off loose dirt.
- Use a soft brush (like an old toothbrush) and lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap (e.g., dish soap) to clean the upper and outsole.
- Do *not* use harsh detergents, bleach, or solvents, as these can damage the GORE-TEX membrane and other materials.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Drying:
- Remove insoles and loosen laces.
- Stuff the shoes with newspaper or paper towels to absorb moisture and help maintain their shape. Replace paper periodically.
- Allow to air dry naturally at room temperature.
- Do *not* place them near direct heat sources (e.g., radiator, hairdryer) or in direct sunlight, as this can damage materials and the waterproof membrane.
- Storage:
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Ensure they are completely dry before storing to prevent odor and mildew.
- Waterproofing Maintenance: Over time, the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating on the outer fabric may wear off. While the GORE-TEX membrane remains waterproof, re-applying a DWR treatment (available from outdoor gear stores) can help water bead up and roll off the outer surface, improving breathability and preventing the fabric from 'wetting out'.
