Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
- Initial Try-On: When you first receive your shoes, try them on with the type of socks you typically wear for running or hiking. Ensure there's a thumb's width space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
- Lacing: Use the traditional lacing system to achieve a secure yet comfortable fit. Experiment with different lacing techniques if you experience pressure points or heel slippage. Make sure the laces are tight enough to prevent your foot from moving excessively inside the shoe but not so tight that they restrict blood flow.
- Break-in Period: While some shoes are comfortable from day one, it's advisable to wear your Pegasus Trail 5 Gore-Tex for a few shorter runs or walks before tackling a long distance event. This allows the shoe to conform to your foot and for you to get accustomed to its feel and support.
Compatibility
- Activity: Best suited for trail running, light hiking, and outdoor activities in varied or wet conditions.
- Terrain: Performs optimally on natural surfaces such as dirt paths, gravel trails, rocky terrain, and muddy tracks.
- Weather: Designed for wet, damp, or unpredictable weather conditions due to its Gore-Tex waterproofing. Can be used in dry conditions but may feel warmer than non-waterproof options.
- Foot Type: Generally designed for a neutral gait, but its supportive structure can benefit a wide range of runners.
Care
Proper care is essential to maintain the performance and longevity of your Gore-Tex trail shoes.
- Cleaning: After each use, especially if muddy, brush off loose dirt with a soft brush or old toothbrush. For caked-on mud, rinse under lukewarm tap water. For a deeper clean, hand wash with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild liquid detergent (avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or fabric softeners). Gently scrub the exterior.
- Drying: *Crucially*, allow your shoes to air dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct heat sources like radiators, heaters, or direct sunlight, as high heat can damage the Gore-Tex membrane and adhesive materials. You can stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and help maintain their shape.
- Waterproofing Maintenance: Over time, the outer durable water repellent (DWR) treatment on the shoe's surface may wear off, causing the fabric to
