Product Information

Full details

The North Face Altamesa 500 v2 is designed for adult male trail runners who require reliable performance in challenging, wet, or rugged outdoor conditions. Its primary benefit is the combination of a GORE-TEX waterproof membrane with a high-traction outsole, ensuring feet stay dry and stable on unpredictable terrain. One caveat for prospective users is that the robust, weather-resistant construction may feel slightly stiffer than lightweight road racing shoes, necessitating a short break-in period.

FAQs

Are these shoes fully waterproof?

Yes, they feature a GORE-TEX waterproof membrane designed to keep your feet dry in rain and wet trail conditions.

Can I wear these on road surfaces?

While capable of handling transitions to pavement, they are specifically engineered for off-road and trail environments.

How should I clean them?

Use a soft brush and water to wipe away mud. Avoid washing machines or chemical detergents to maintain the waterproof coating.

Are they suitable for steep terrain?

Yes, the outsole is designed for off-road traction, making them stable on steep hillsides and uneven ground.

What is the primary difference in the Altamesa 500 v2 series?

The Altamesa 500 v2 is built for durability and protection, with specific versions like the GTX featuring the GORE-TEX waterproof membrane.

Troubleshooting

Moisture buildup inside the shoe

Ensure you are using moisture-wicking socks rather than cotton, which traps sweat, to allow the GORE-TEX membrane to function correctly.

Outsole losing grip

Check the tread for embedded mud or debris and clean it thoroughly with a stiff brush to restore the rubber-to-ground contact.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Excellent waterproof protection for rainy weather
Superior traction on loose or uneven surfaces
Reinforced upper offers high durability against trail hazards
Engineered specifically for demanding trail environments

Cons

Slightly heavier than minimalist road trainers
Waterproof membrane may reduce breathability in extremely hot temperatures
Requires a break-in period for optimal comfort

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the longevity of your Altamesa 500 v2, clean the exterior after muddy runs using a soft-bristled brush and lukewarm water. Avoid using harsh detergents or putting them in a washing machine, as this can degrade the GORE-TEX waterproof seal. Allow the shoes to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources like radiators, which can warp the materials. For the best fit, ensure you are wearing the appropriate moisture-wicking trail socks to complement the breathable-waterproof interior.
