Full details
The Puma Deviate Nitro 4 trainers are designed for male adult runners seeking a responsive and propulsive shoe for everyday training and speed work on asphalt surfaces. Their key benefit lies in the combination of lightweight NITROFOAM cushioning and a PWRPLATE carbon plate for enhanced energy return and a snappy ride. A potential caveat for some runners might be the 8mm drop, which is suited for those accustomed to a moderate heel-to-toe transition.

FAQs
What is the main benefit of the PWRPLATE technology?
The PWRPLATE is a carbon composite plate engineered to provide enhanced propulsion and a 'snappy' feel, helping runners feel faster and more efficient during uptempo training runs.
How does NITROFOAM contribute to the shoe's performance?
NITROFOAM consists of two layers of nitrogen-infused foam. It offers a balance of lightweight responsiveness and cushioning, providing a smooth and comfortable ride while enhancing energy return.
Are these shoes suitable for marathon running?
The Deviate Nitro 4 offers good cushioning and energy return, making it suitable for many marathon training runs and potentially for marathon racing for runners who prefer this level of cushioning and drop. However, for ultra-long distances or runners needing maximum cushioning, other models might be considered.
What type of runner is the Deviate Nitro 4 best suited for?
These shoes are ideal for neutral runners looking for a versatile trainer that can handle everyday mileage, tempo runs, and speed training on asphalt. They are designed for runners who appreciate responsiveness and propulsion.
Can I use these shoes for trail running?
The Deviate Nitro 4 is primarily designed for asphalt and road running. The PUMAGRIP outsole offers good traction on pavement, but it is not optimized for the varied terrain and conditions found on trails. For trail running, a shoe with a more aggressive outsole pattern is recommended.
How do I clean my Puma Deviate Nitro 4 trainers?
Clean the shoes with a damp cloth for the exterior. For the interior, remove the insoles and allow them to air dry. Avoid machine washing or using harsh chemicals.
What is the drop of the Deviate Nitro 4?
The shoe has a drop of 8 mm, meaning there is an 8mm difference in height between the heel and the forefoot. This is considered a moderate drop.
Troubleshooting
Shoes feel too stiff
This is likely due to the PWRPLATE carbon plate. Try incorporating shorter, easier runs initially to allow your feet and the shoe to adapt. Ensure you have the correct size, as a shoe that is too small can exacerbate stiffness.
Reduced responsiveness over time
The NITROFOAM cushioning may compress over extensive use. Ensure the shoes are clean and free of debris, which can sometimes affect performance. If significant loss of cushioning occurs, it may be time to consider replacement.
Traction issues on wet surfaces
While PUMAGRIP is durable, traction on extremely wet or polished surfaces can be reduced. Ensure the outsole is clean. For very wet conditions, consider slower speeds or alternative footwear if extreme grip is paramount.
Discomfort in the midfoot or forefoot
This could be related to the PWRPLATE's placement or the shoe's 8mm drop. Ensure the lacing is appropriate for your foot shape. If discomfort persists, consult with a running specialist or consider a shoe with a different geometry or plate design.
