What is the fit like?

The 1996 Retro Nuptse has a signature boxy, slightly oversized fit compared to modern performance gear.

Can I machine wash this jacket?

Yes, it is machine washable; use a gentle cycle with down-safe detergent and tumble dry on low with dryer balls.

Is the material recycled?

Yes, the shell is constructed from 100% recycled nylon ripstop.

Troubleshooting

Down feathers poking through fabric

This is normal for high-fill down; gently pull the feather back into the garment from the inside rather than pulling it out.

Jacket feels flat or lacks loft

Tumble dry the jacket on low with dryer balls to restore the air space within the down insulation.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Excellent warmth-to-weight ratio
Durable, water-repellent exterior
Iconic, timeless design
Highly packable for easy transport

Cons

Boxy fit may be too loose for some users
Down insulation requires specific laundry care
Limited stretch compared to softshell alternatives

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Because this jacket uses natural down insulation, proper care is essential to maintain its loft. To clean the garment, use a front-loading washing machine on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent specifically designed for down; avoid using bleach or fabric softeners. Tumble dry on low heat, adding clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help the down clusters re-fluff during the drying process. Ensure the jacket is completely dry before storage to prevent clumping. Store in a cool, dry place and avoid hanging it in direct sunlight for extended periods to protect the nylon material.
