Product Information

Full details

Johnstone's Soft Sheen Emulsion Paint is designed for homeowners and decorators looking to achieve a sophisticated, velvety finish on interior walls and ceilings with minimal effort. Its primary strength lies in its creamy application and superior coverage, which effectively hides minor surface imperfections; however, users should note that the soft sheen finish is most effective in rooms where light reflection is desired rather than high-traffic areas requiring extreme scrubbability.

FAQs

Can I use this paint in a bathroom?

While it is wipeable, it is primarily designed for general interior walls and ceilings; a dedicated bathroom paint with anti-fungal properties is recommended for high-humidity areas.

Is this paint water-based?

Yes, Johnstone's Soft Sheen Emulsion is water-based, allowing for easy soap and water cleanup of brushes and rollers.

How many coats should I apply?

Two coats are generally recommended for an even, professional finish and maximum durability.

Can I use this on wood or metal?

No, this product is specifically formulated for mineral surfaces like plaster, masonry, and drywall. Use appropriate wood or metal primers and enamels for those surfaces.

Does it have a strong odor?

As a modern water-based emulsion, it has a low-odor profile compared to solvent-based paints, making it more pleasant to use in interior living spaces.

Troubleshooting

Visible roller marks after drying

Ensure you are keeping a 'wet edge' while painting and do not over-work the paint once it begins to tack up.

Paint is not covering in one coat

While high-coverage, most walls require two coats. Ensure the first coat is fully dry before applying the second to avoid lifting.

Peeling or flaking shortly after application

Check that the underlying surface was free of grease, dust, or moisture. Previous layers of flaking paint must be scraped and sanded before re-application.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Excellent hiding power and coverage
Easy to apply due to creamy consistency
Sophisticated, low-glare sheen
Helps mask minor wall imperfections
Wipeable finish for easy maintenance

Cons

Not suitable for extremely high-traffic areas
Requires proper surface preparation for best results
Slightly more sheen than a dead-flat matte

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the best finish, begin by ensuring your surfaces are clean, dry, and free from loose paint or dust. If painting over new plaster, apply a suitable mist coat first to prevent absorption issues.

Preparation: Fill any large cracks and sand smooth. Prime porous or repaired areas.
Application: Stir thoroughly before use. Apply using a quality synthetic brush or medium-pile roller.
Drying: Allow adequate time between coats, typically 2-4 hours depending on room temperature and humidity.
Care: Avoid washing the walls for at least two weeks after application to allow the paint to fully cure. When cleaning, use a soft, damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical abrasives.
