FAQs

Is this jacket windproof?

Yes, the waterproof fabric construction inherently blocks wind, providing a reliable barrier against chilling gusts.

Does it come with an insulated lining?

No, the Birchdale II is a technical waterproof shell and does not contain internal thermal insulation.

How should I clean my Birchdale II jacket?

Wash it on a cool, gentle cycle with a dedicated technical gear wash. Never use fabric softener, as this clogs the breathable pores of the fabric.

Can I wear this for skiing?

While it provides waterproofing, it lacks specific ski features like a powder skirt or lift pass pocket, though it serves well as a protective shell layer.

Are the pockets waterproof?

The pockets are designed for weather resistance, but it is recommended to keep sensitive electronics in a dry bag inside the pocket for maximum safety.

Troubleshooting

Water no longer beads on the surface of the fabric

The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating has likely worn off. Clean the jacket and apply a fresh DWR re-proofer according to the product manufacturer's instructions.

Condensation building up inside the jacket during heavy activity

Ensure you are using appropriate moisture-wicking base layers. Even breathable jackets have limits when body heat production is very high; consider opening the zip slightly for extra ventilation.

Pros and Cons

Pros

High level of breathability for active use
Excellent freedom of movement due to stretch fabric and articulation
Robust protection against heavy rain
Highly adjustable features for a personalized fit

Cons

Shell-only design requires layering for warmth in cold climates
Material may require periodic re-treatment to maintain water-repellency
Limited to specific sizing options within the product range

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the longevity of the waterproof coating, follow these maintenance guidelines:

Cleaning: Machine wash on a gentle cycle using a technical cleaner designed for waterproof garments. Avoid biological detergents or fabric softeners as these can strip the durable water repellent (DWR) coating.
Drying: Air dry the garment naturally. Avoid placing it directly on radiators or high-heat sources.
Re-proofing: If water stops beading on the surface, apply a DWR spray or wash-in treatment to restore performance.
Compatibility: This jacket is best used as an outer layer in a layering system. Pair it with a fleece or synthetic mid-layer during colder months to maintain warmth while keeping the shell as your primary weather barrier.
