Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup Instructions
- Prepare Your Container: Select a hanging basket, patio container, or window box that has adequate drainage holes. For wire baskets, line them with moss, coir, or a suitable fabric liner to retain compost.
- Add Compost: Fill your chosen container with fresh, good-quality potting compost, leaving approximately 2-3 inches of space from the rim.
- Planting: Gently remove each plant from its nursery pot. If the roots are tightly bound, gently tease them apart. Arrange the plants in your container, typically placing upright varieties towards the center or back and trailing varieties around the edges for a cascading effect.
- Fill and Water: Backfill any gaps with additional compost, gently firming it around the plants. Water thoroughly until water begins to drain from the bottom of the container.
Compatibility
This Autumn Basket Plant Mix is specifically selected for optimal performance in hanging baskets, patio containers, and window boxes. They are intended for outdoor use and are adapted to cooler seasonal conditions.
Care Guidelines
- Watering: Keep the compost consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Check the moisture level daily, especially during windy or dry periods. Reduce watering slightly during very cold or dormant periods.
- Light: Most varieties in this mix prefer a location with partial to full sunlight, aiming for at least 4-6 hours of direct sun per day for best flowering and growth.
- Feeding: The fresh potting compost will provide initial nutrients. For extended vibrant displays, consider applying a balanced liquid feed every 2-4 weeks during milder growing periods.
- Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers (known as deadheading) from blooming varieties like pansies and violas. This encourages the plant to produce more blooms and helps maintain a tidy appearance.
- Protection: While selected for cooler weather tolerance, in instances of severe or prolonged frost, consider moving containers to a sheltered spot (e.g., against a wall, under an overhang) or covering them with horticultural fleece overnight for added protection.
