Full details
The HOKA Mafate 5 Trainers are designed for adult male runners seeking a high-performance shoe for technical trail running. Its key benefit is superior cushioning and protection for long-distance efforts on challenging terrain. FAQs
What type of terrain are the HOKA Mafate 5 trainers best for?
The Mafate 5 trainers are specifically designed for technical trail running, including rocky, root-filled, and uneven surfaces where superior grip and protection are essential.
How do I attach the optional ankle gaiter?
The shoes feature dedicated attachment points. Secure the gaiter to these points for a snug fit that helps keep trail debris out.
Is the cushioning too soft for fast running?
The dual-density midsole provides a balance of cushioning and responsiveness, suitable for endurance efforts. While cushioned, the design aims to maintain efficiency for long-distance trail running.
Are these shoes suitable for hiking?
While the durability and cushioning are beneficial for hiking, their design is optimized for the dynamic movements of running. For general hiking, other footwear might be more appropriate depending on the trail type.
How do I clean the warp knit upper?
Use a soft brush to remove loose dirt, followed by a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or machine washing to preserve the anti-fray treatment and material integrity.
What is the purpose of the TPU cage?
The TPU cage provides structural support to the midfoot, enhancing the lockdown and stability of the shoe on challenging terrain.
Do the reflective details significantly improve visibility?
Yes, the reflective details are designed to increase visibility in low-light conditions such as dawn, dusk, or night running, contributing to overall safety.
Troubleshooting
Shoes feel too tight or loose
Adjust the lacing system. Ensure the Dynamic Vamp is sitting comfortably. Refer to sizing charts for accurate fit and consider if a different size is needed.
Reduced traction on wet surfaces
Ensure the Vibram® Megagrip outsole is clean. Even with advanced grip, extremely slick surfaces may still pose a challenge. Allow shoes to dry if they are saturated.
Debris entering the shoe
Attach the optional ankle gaiter to the designated points for enhanced protection. Ensure laces are tied securely.
Discomfort during long runs
Verify the correct shoe size. Break in the shoes gradually on shorter runs before attempting long distances. Ensure socks provide adequate cushioning.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup: The HOKA Mafate 5 Trainers are ready to wear out of the box. Ensure proper lacing for a secure fit. If using the optional ankle gaiter, attach it to the designated points on the shoe for added debris protection.
Compatibility: These trainers are designed for adult male runners and are best suited for technical trail running environments. They are compatible with standard running socks. The size_adult_foot_uk attribute indicates available sizing for optimal fit.
Care: To maintain the performance and longevity of your Mafate 5 trainers:
- Cleaning: Remove excess dirt and mud after each use with a dry brush. For deeper cleaning, use a damp cloth or sponge and mild soap. Avoid machine washing or harsh detergents.
- Drying: Allow the shoes to air dry naturally at room temperature. Do not expose them to direct heat sources like radiators or hairdryers, as this can damage the materials.
- Storage: Store the shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
