FAQs
Are these shoes suitable for long-distance backpacking?
Yes, the compressed EVA midsole and carbon shank provide the necessary cushioning and support for long days on the trail.
How do I clean the suede upper?
Use a specialized suede brush or a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt. Avoid using water-based cleaners unless they are specifically formulated for waterproof suede.
Can I wear these for everyday walking?
While they are very comfortable, they are technically engineered for hiking and climbing. Frequent use on concrete may wear down the specialized Vibram lugs faster than a standard casual shoe.
Does the GORE-TEX liner make the shoe hot?
The Invisible Fit Technology is designed to be highly breathable, balancing waterproof protection with heat management, though it will be warmer than a non-waterproof mesh shoe.
What is the primary benefit of the carbon shank?
The carbon shank adds torsional rigidity, preventing the shoe from twisting too easily on uneven terrain and providing a stable platform for climbing.
Troubleshooting
Moisture inside the shoe
Ensure your gaiters are properly attached or your pant cuffs are covering the shoe opening to prevent water from entering from above.
Reduced traction
Clean the outsole with a stiff brush to remove compacted mud or small pebbles trapped in the tread pattern.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the longevity of your Altra Konseal Hiking Shoes, proper maintenance is essential. Since the upper is constructed from suede, avoid machine washing; instead, gently brush off dried mud with a soft-bristled brush. If the shoes become wet, air dry them naturally away from direct heat sources like radiators, which can damage the GORE-TEX membrane or warp the EVA midsole. For optimal performance, ensure your laces are tightened securely to lock the heel in place before beginning a steep ascent or descent. Regularly inspect the lugs on the Vibram outsole for debris to maintain maximum traction on trail surfaces.
