FAQs

What is the actual capacity of this duffel?

This duffel has a generous volume of 71 liters, providing ample space for extensive gear, clothing, or expedition essentials.

Can I carry this duffel on my back like a backpack?

Yes, it features detachable, adjustable, alpine-cut shoulder straps specifically designed to allow you to comfortably carry it like a backpack, offering an ergonomic fit and minimizing twisting.

Is this duffel waterproof?

It is highly water-resistant, built with 1000D Recycled PVC and 840D Recycled Ballistic Nylon with a Non-PFC Durable Water-Repellent (DWR) finish, along with a weather-resistant zipped flap. While it will protect against rain and splashes, it is not designed for full submersion.

What materials is the duffel made from?

The body is made from 1000D Phthalate-Free, Recycled PVC, and the boot (bottom) is 840D Recycled Ballistic Nylon with a Non-PFC DWR finish. These recycled materials contribute to its eco-conscious design.

How do I clean my Base Camp Duffel?

To clean, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. For more stubborn dirt, a soft brush can be used. Ensure the duffel is completely air-dried before storing it to prevent mildew.

Are there internal pockets for organization?

Yes, the main compartment includes a secure-zip mesh pocket, and there's an end-cap mesh pocket, which is particularly useful for separating wet or dirty clothes from the rest of your gear.

How much does the duffel weigh?

The North Face Base Camp Duffel - M weighs approximately 1.62 kg (1620 g) when empty.

Can I use this duffel for air travel?

Yes, its rugged construction makes it suitable for checked luggage on flights. However, please check with your airline for their specific checked baggage size and weight limits, as these can vary.

Troubleshooting

Duffel feels uncomfortable as a backpack.

Ensure the alpine-cut shoulder straps are correctly attached and adjusted for your height and torso. Distribute weight evenly inside the duffel. If heavily loaded, consider using it as a traditional duffel with side handles for shorter distances or when better ergonomic support is available.

Zipper feels stiff or hard to operate.

The D-zip opening with its weather-resistant flap is designed to be snug. Apply a small amount of zipper lubricant or a graphite pencil to the zipper teeth to improve smoothness. Ensure no fabric is caught in the zipper path.

Items inside feel damp after exposure to rain.

While highly water-resistant, extreme submersion or prolonged exposure to heavy rain can sometimes test its limits. Ensure the weather-resistant zipped flap is fully closed over the D-zip opening. For critical items, consider using additional dry bags inside the duffel for an extra layer of protection.

Duffel seems too bulky or unstable when not full.

Utilize the four compression straps on the sides. Cinch them down firmly to compact the duffel and prevent items from shifting, which will improve stability and reduce overall bulk.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Exceptional durability and rugged construction withstands harsh conditions.
Highly water-resistant materials protect contents from moisture.
Versatile carrying options allow use as a duffel or a comfortable backpack.
Ample 71-liter capacity with effective internal organization pockets.
Compression straps help manage load size and stability.
Made with recycled materials, offering an eco-friendly benefit.

Cons

At 1.62 kg, it can be heavy for some users, especially when empty.
Lack of wheels can make navigating airports or smooth surfaces more challenging.
Its robust construction can make it somewhat bulky, even when not fully packed.
The duffel-to-backpack conversion might not offer the same ventilation as a dedicated backpack for long treks.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup

Attach Shoulder Straps: Locate the four attachment points (two on top, two near the base) for the alpine-cut shoulder straps. Connect the clips securely. Adjust the strap length to achieve a comfortable, ergonomic fit for your torso, ensuring minimal twisting. When not in use, these straps can be easily detached and stored inside the duffel or removed entirely.
Utilize Compression Straps: After packing, pull the four compression straps located on the sides of the duffel to secure your load and reduce its volume. This stabilizes contents and makes the duffel more compact.

Compatibility

This 71-liter duffel is compatible with a wide range of travel and adventure scenarios, including:

Expeditions: Ideal for carrying climbing gear, camping equipment, or extended clothing for multi-day trips.
Sports Gear: Perfect for transporting ski boots, diving equipment, or other bulky athletic items.
General Travel: Suitable for car trips, train travel, or as checked luggage for flights, though its lack of wheels might require more effort in large terminals.

Care

Cleaning: For general cleaning, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. For tougher dirt, a soft brush can be used. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the water-resistant coating. Allow to air dry completely before storage.
Storage: Store the duffel in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use. Ensure it is empty and clean to prevent mildew or odors. The mesh-bag packaging it comes in can be used to keep the duffel clean during storage.
DWR Maintenance: Over time, the Non-PFC DWR finish may wear off. Specialized DWR re-treatment sprays can be applied to restore water repellency if needed.
