The Timco Carriage Bolt is an essential hardware solution for professionals and DIY enthusiasts involved in timber construction or ironmongery installation. Featuring a domed head and a square anti-spin shoulder, these bolts provide a secure, flush finish when mounting items to wood, effectively preventing rotation during tightening. While these grade 4.8 carbon steel bolts offer robust clamping power for heavy-duty projects, users should note that they are finished with zinc, which is suitable for indoor or sheltered environments but may require additional corrosion protection if used in highly exposed, coastal, or permanent outdoor applications.

They feature a zinc finish, which provides moderate rust resistance. They are fine for garden use but should be inspected regularly or upgraded to stainless steel if used in direct contact with rain or salt air.
This refers to the mechanical property of the steel, indicating a specific tensile strength suitable for standard timber construction and general ironmongery.
No, you only need a drill for the hole, a mallet to seat the shoulder, and a standard spanner or socket wrench to tighten the hex nut.
Yes, all Timco carriage bolts mentioned in this range are supplied with the corresponding hex nuts.
Ensure the bolt length accounts for the total thickness of the materials being joined, plus enough extra length to accommodate the nut and any washers used.
The square shoulder has not seated correctly. Tap the head firmly with a mallet to force the square neck into the wood, or ensure the hole is not too large for the shoulder.
Check the threads for damage or debris. Use a wire brush to clean the threads and ensure the nut is aligned perfectly perpendicular to the bolt axis before turning.
For optimal results, always ensure you are using the correct drill bit size for your M12 diameter bolt. While the bolt is finished in zinc to resist surface oxidation, this is not a substitute for stainless steel in marine or extreme weather environments. If installing in damp conditions, consider adding a thin bead of exterior-grade silicone around the head or using an additional rubber washer to prevent moisture from entering the pre-drilled hole. Keep the threads free of debris during installation to prevent cross-threading.
