These fantastic plants are easy to grow and drought tolerant, happily taking the heat in its stride in any garden sun-trap space, be it in pots or borders. Impressive, large flower clusters appear from mid to late summer, hosted on strong, sturdy stems that need no staking. They provide structure, height and movement to planting schemes while taking up very little foot room, therefore making them the perfect solution to a tight or narrow planting space. Grow Agapanthus plants in rich fertile, well drained soil, in a sunny position. When growing Agapanthus in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No.3 . Feed and water African Lilies regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded Agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural seed heads during autumn. When the first frost blacken the seed heads, cut the stems back to ground level. Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn. Container grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Divide agapanthus clumps in spring when they become over crowded.
