Full details

The Caran d'Ache Prismalo Aquarelle 40-piece set is an essential tool for professional artists, illustrators, and dedicated students who require a versatile medium that bridges the gap between precise drawing and expressive painting. These premium Swiss-made water-soluble pencils offer the control of a hard-lead graphite pencil with the ability to transform into vibrant watercolor washes upon contact with water, though users should note that the lead is intentionally firm, requiring a deliberate touch for larger washes.

FAQs

Can I use these pencils without water?

Yes, they function perfectly as traditional, high-quality colored pencils for sketching and drawing.

Are these pencils safe for children?

They comply with CE EN71 standards, but are primarily designed for professional artists and students due to the fine, hard lead.

Do I need special paper for watercolor effects?

While they work on many surfaces, watercolor paper is recommended to get the best results when using water.

Can I mix these with permanent pencils?

Yes, they are designed to be used in mixed-media projects alongside permanent pencils or pastels.

How many colors are included in this set?

This specific set includes 40 distinct water-soluble colors.

Troubleshooting

Lead keeps breaking during sharpening.

Use a fresh, sharp blade in your sharpener and avoid forcing the pencil into the mechanism; consistent, light pressure is key.

Color is not dissolving into a wash.

Ensure you are using high-quality watercolor paper and apply a bit more water; ensure you haven't pressed too hard, which may seal the paper fibers.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Exceptional lightfastness for archival quality work
Hard lead allows for ultra-fine, clean, and accurate lines
Hexagonal shape prevents rolling on tilted drafting tables
Excellent blending capabilities when combined with other media like Neocolor pastels
Swiss-made quality construction ensures long-term durability

Cons

Hard lead texture may feel less creamy than wax-based alternatives
Requires more effort to achieve opaque coverage compared to soft-core pencils
Not intended for kids who prefer soft, thick crayon-like lead

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the longevity of your Prismalo pencils, store them in the provided metal tin to protect the wood casing and lead integrity. When sharpening, use a high-quality metal sharpener to accommodate the hard lead, taking care not to over-sharpen to a needle point, which can cause snapping in any pencil. The pencils are fully compatible with standard cold-pressed or hot-pressed watercolor paper. For cleaning, avoid submerging the wooden casing in water, as this can degrade the cedar shell. If you are mixing techniques, clean your brushes thoroughly between colors to prevent muddied pigments.
