FAQs
What types of fabric can I dye with Dylon Hand Fabric Dye?
This dye is specifically formulated for natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, viscose, wool, and silk. It will not work on synthetic materials like pure polyester, acrylic, or nylon.
Do I need any additional ingredients besides the dye?
Yes, you will need 250g of ordinary salt for each 50g pack of Dylon Hand Fabric Dye. The salt helps the dye to absorb properly into the fabric.
How much fabric can one pack of dye color?
One 50g pack is designed to dye up to 250g (approximately 8.8 oz) of dry fabric to a full, rich shade. For larger amounts of fabric, the color will be lighter.
Why did my dyed fabric turn out a different color than expected?
The final color can be influenced by the fabric's original color. Dylon dyes follow color mixing rules; for example, using Ocean Blue dye on a yellow fabric will result in a greenish hue. The fabric type and how consistently the fabric was stirred can also affect the outcome.
Can I use this dye in a washing machine?
No, Dylon Hand Fabric Dye is specifically designed for hand application in a bowl or sink. For machine dyeing, look for Dylon's machine dye products.
How do I ensure the color is even and doesn't have streaks?
Ensure your fabric is thoroughly wet and free of dry spots before placing it in the dye bath. Stir the fabric continuously for the first 15 minutes, then regularly for the remaining 45 minutes to ensure the dye is distributed uniformly.
How should I care for my newly dyed items?
After dyeing, rinse the fabric in cold water until the water runs clear. For the first few washes, wash the dyed item separately to prevent any color transfer. Dry away from direct heat and sunlight to maintain color vibrancy.
Troubleshooting
Color is uneven or streaky.
Ensure the fabric was thoroughly damp before placing it in the dye bath. Stir the fabric continuously for the first 15 minutes and regularly for the remaining 45 minutes to distribute the dye evenly. Make sure the dye was fully dissolved before adding it to the bath.
Color is not as vibrant as expected.
Verify that you used 250g of ordinary salt, which is crucial for dye uptake. Check if the fabric weight exceeded 250g for one pack, as this will result in a lighter shade. Ensure the water temperature was approximately 40°C.
Dye did not take to the fabric at all.
Confirm that the fabric is made of natural fibers (cotton, linen, viscose, wool, silk) and does not have any special finishes (e.g., stain-resistant, waterproof). Synthetic fabrics will not absorb the dye. Also, ensure the correct water temperature was used.
Dye is bleeding in subsequent washes.
After dyeing, rinse the fabric in cold water until the water runs completely clear before washing. For the first few washes, always wash the newly dyed item separately from other laundry to prevent color transfer.
Staining on sink or container.
Always use a stainless steel sink or a dedicated plastic basin that is either disposable or easily cleaned. Rinse the sink/container immediately and thoroughly with water and a mild cleaner after removing the fabric to prevent dye from setting.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup Instructions
Prepare Fabric: Weigh your dry fabric. One pack dyes up to 250g of dry fabric to a full shade. Wash the fabric thoroughly and leave it damp.
Gather Materials: You will need the Dylon Hand Fabric Dye, 250g of ordinary salt, rubber gloves, a large bowl or stainless steel sink, and warm water.
Dissolve Dye: Wearing rubber gloves, dissolve the entire contents of the dye sachet in 500ml (approximately 2 cups) of warm water. Stir well to ensure no lumps remain.
Prepare Dye Bath: In your chosen bowl or stainless steel sink, add approximately 6 litres (about 1.5 gallons) of warm water at 40°C (104°F).
Add Salt: Stir in 250g (approximately 10 tablespoons) of ordinary salt into the warm water until dissolved.
Combine: Add the dissolved dye solution to the salt water bath and stir well to mix.
Submerge Fabric: Carefully submerge your damp, pre-washed fabric into the dye bath.
Dyeing Process: Stir the fabric continuously for the first 15 minutes, then regularly for another 45 minutes (total dyeing time of 60 minutes) to ensure even color absorption.
Rinse: After dyeing, remove the fabric and rinse it thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear.
Wash & Dry: Wash the dyed fabric in warm water (separately from other items for the first few washes). Dry the fabric away from direct heat and sunlight to preserve color vibrancy.
Compatibility
Suitable Fabrics: Dylon Hand Fabric Dye is designed for natural fabrics including cotton, linen, viscose, wool, and silk.
Unsuitable Fabrics: It is not suitable for pure polyester, acrylic, nylon, or any fabrics that have special finishes such as waterproofing, dry clean only labels, or fire-retardant treatments.
Care Instructions for Dyed Items
Initial Washes: Always wash newly dyed items separately for the first few washes to prevent any residual dye from bleeding onto other garments.
Washing Temperature: Wash dyed items in warm water. Avoid extremely hot water, especially for the first few washes, to help set the color.
Drying: Dry dyed fabrics away from direct sunlight or excessive heat, as this can cause colors to fade over time. Air drying is often best.
