Full details
The Altra Olympus 7 is designed for adult male hikers who prioritize maximal cushioning and stability when navigating rugged mountain trails. These hiking shoes excel at providing all-day comfort and reliable traction on varied terrain, though their high-stack profile may feel less precise for technical scrambling compared to low-profile footwear.

FAQs
Are these shoes waterproof?
The standard Altra Olympus 7 is breathable, not waterproof. If you require water protection, look for the 'GTX' (GORE-TEX) variants.
Are these suitable for trail running?
Yes, while designed for hiking, their construction makes them highly capable for trail running, especially on long-distance technical routes.
How long should the cushioning last?
Generally, you can expect the midsole cushioning to provide support for 300-500 miles, depending on the intensity of your usage and body weight.
Can I replace the insoles?
Yes, the factory insoles are removable and can be swapped for custom orthotics if preferred.
Does the wide toe box run true to size?
Altra shoes are designed with a unique 'FootShape' toe box. Most users find them true to size, but the extra room in the toes is intentional for natural foot spread.
Troubleshooting
Foot fatigue or arch discomfort
Ensure your lacing is not too tight across the bridge of the foot; consider using an aftermarket insole if you require higher arch support.
Debris entering the shoe
Use a compatible gaiter to cover the opening between your ankle and the shoe collar to keep trail grit out.
Slippage on extremely slick rock
Reduce pace on wet, smooth surfaces as even the best hiking outsoles have traction limits on non-porous wet rock.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent underfoot cushioning for long-distance comfort
- Wide platform increases stability on uneven surfaces
- High-traction outsole provides confidence on varied terrain
- Durable build quality for harsh trail conditions
Cons
- High stack height may reduce ground feel
- Not suitable for users who prefer minimal footwear
- Bulky aesthetic compared to lightweight trail runners
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure the longevity of your Altra Olympus 7 shoes, avoid machine washing or drying, as high temperatures can compromise the integrity of the foam cushioning and adhesives. Instead, clean the exterior with a soft brush and lukewarm water after muddy treks. Ensure the laces are tightened evenly across the eyelets to maintain the intended support structure. Because these shoes feature a specific foot-shape design, they are best paired with moisture-wicking synthetic or wool hiking socks to prevent friction and maximize breathability.
