Setup, Compatibility & Care
Initial Setup & Fit
- Try Them On: When you first receive your Alverstone 2 GTX shoes, try them on with the type of socks you'll typically wear for hiking. Ensure there's a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
- Lacing: Lace them firmly but not overly tight. Walk around to feel how they flex and support your foot. Pay attention to any pressure points.
- Break-in Period: While often comfortable out of the box, it's recommended to wear them on short walks or around the house before embarking on a long hike. This allows the materials to mold to your foot for optimal comfort.
Compatibility
The Merrell Alverstone 2 GTX hiking shoes are ideal for:
- Day Hiking: Perfect for single-day excursions on established trails.
- Multi-day Trekking: Suitable for longer trips where waterproof protection and comfort are paramount.
- Varied Terrain: Performs well on dirt paths, gravel trails, rocky sections, and light scrambling.
- Wet Conditions: Excellent for use in damp environments, light rain, and crossing small puddles or streams.
Care & Maintenance
Proper care extends the life and performance of your shoes, especially the Gore-Tex membrane and leather/suede upper.
- Cleaning:
- Remove loose dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth after each use.
- For tougher grime, use a specialized footwear cleaner designed for leather and waterproof membranes. Avoid harsh detergents or solvents.
- Rinse with clean water. Do not submerge completely if avoidable.
- Drying:
- Allow shoes to air dry naturally at room temperature.
- Do NOT place them near direct heat sources (like radiators or open fires) as this can damage the leather and adhesives.
- You can stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and help maintain their shape. Change the newspaper periodically.
- Waterproofing Treatment:
- Periodically apply a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment specifically designed for Gore-Tex and leather footwear. This helps maintain the fabric's water repellency and breathability.
- Storage:
- Store your shoes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Ensure they are clean and completely dry before storing to prevent mildew or material degradation.
