FAQs
What type of runs is the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 best suited for?
The Endorphin Speed 5 is best for speed training, tempo runs, interval workouts, and race days, from 5K to marathon distances. It truly shines when you're pushing the pace.
Can I use this shoe for everyday training?
While it can handle moderate training, its design is optimized for speed and efficiency. For everyday slower runs or high-mileage base training, you might find a dedicated daily trainer offers more comfort and durability for those specific purposes.
How does the nylon plate compare to a carbon plate?
The semi-rigid nylon plate in the Endorphin Speed 5 provides a propulsive feel and torsional rigidity, offering a more forgiving and slightly less aggressive ride than a full carbon fiber plate. This makes it a versatile option for both training and racing, often preferred for its blend of speed and comfort.
What is the heel-to-toe drop of this shoe?
The Endorphin Speed 5 has an 8mm heel-to-toe drop, with a heel stack height of 36mm and a forefoot stack height of 28mm.
What surfaces is the PWRTRAC outsole designed for?
The PWRTRAC rubber outsole provides reliable grip on common running surfaces such as asphalt roads, track surfaces, and well-maintained park paths.
What is the weight of the Endorphin Speed 5?
The men's version of the Endorphin Speed 5 weighs approximately 8.4oz (238g) for a US size 9.
How should I clean my Endorphin Speed 5 shoes?
Clean with a soft brush, mild soap, and cold water. Gently scrub away dirt and stains. Avoid machine washing or drying, as high heat can damage the materials. Always air dry your shoes away from direct sunlight or heat.
Troubleshooting
My feet feel too constrained or tight.
Ensure your laces are not overtightened. The mesh upper adapts, but if discomfort persists, consider trying a different lacing technique or verifying you have the correct size. Thinner socks can also help.
I'm not feeling the 'speed' or propulsion effect.
The SPEEDROLL Technology and nylon plate are most noticeable at higher paces. Try incorporating some faster segments or strides into your run to experience the full benefit. Ensure your running form is efficient, as these technologies complement good mechanics.
Slipping on wet or slightly challenging surfaces.
While the PWRTRAC rubber outsole provides reliable grip, no shoe is completely slip-proof on all wet or uneven surfaces. Reduce your pace and be cautious in slick conditions. Check the outsole for excessive wear, which can reduce grip.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Exceptional speed and responsiveness for training and racing.
- Versatile for various fast-paced runs, from sprints to marathons.
- Comfortable and breathable upper that adapts to the foot.
- Reliable grip across multiple common running surfaces.
- Efficient energy return promotes powerful and explosive strides.
Cons
- Best suited for asphalt and well-maintained paths, potentially less optimal for highly technical trails.
- The semi-rigid plate may not suit runners who prefer maximum forefoot flexibility.
- While versatile, its speed-focused design might be less cushioned for very slow, recovery-paced runs compared to dedicated daily trainers.
- Durability might be less than heavier, more built-up daily training shoes due to its lightweight competition-oriented construction.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
- Lacing: When you first put on your Endorphin Speed 5, ensure you lace them snugly but comfortably. The breathable mesh upper is designed to adapt to your foot over time, so don't over-tighten initially. Experiment with different lacing patterns if you experience pressure points.
- Break-In: While generally comfortable out of the box, give your shoes a few shorter, easy runs before tackling long distances or high-intensity workouts to allow them to fully adapt to your foot.
Compatibility
- Runner Type: Ideal for neutral runners seeking a fast, responsive shoe.
- Surfaces: Best suited for asphalt, track, and well-maintained park paths. While the PWRTRAC outsole offers good grip, its primary design focus is on these flatter, firmer surfaces.
- Run Types: Optimized for speed days, tempo runs, interval training, and race day performance across various distances.
Care
- Cleaning: To clean your shoes, gently brush off loose dirt. Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild soap and cold water for tougher spots. Avoid harsh detergents or machine washing, as this can damage materials.
- Drying: Always air dry your shoes at room temperature, away from direct heat sources like radiators or sunlight, which can warp materials. You can stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and help maintain their shape.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures for extended periods.
