Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup & Application
- Prepare the Surface: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, free from dust, grease, oil, and loose material. For optimal adhesion, abrade non-porous surfaces lightly.
- Open Cartridge: Pierce the seal at the top of the cartridge and screw on the nozzle. Cut the nozzle to the desired bead size.
- Load into Gun: Insert the cartridge into a standard sealant gun.
- Apply Evenly: Apply the sealant with a steady, even pressure, ensuring continuous contact with both surfaces.
- Tooling: Tool the applied sealant within the tack-free time (Info needed: specific tack-free time) using a suitable tool moistened with Sika Tooling Agent N or soapy water for a smooth finish.
- Curing: Allow adequate time for the sealant to cure before exposing it to stress or water.
Compatibility
Sikaflex 522 exhibits excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates found in caravans and motorhomes, including:
- Metals: Aluminium, steel, galvanized steel
- Plastics: PVC, GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic), various painted plastics (always test on a small, inconspicuous area first)
- Timber: Treated and untreated woods
- Glass
- Ceramics
It is crucial to perform preliminary adhesion tests on original substrates, especially for plastics and coatings, as variations can occur.
Care & Maintenance
- Cleaning: Once cured, the sealant is generally maintenance-free. Clean the sealed area with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or solvents that could degrade the sealant.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect sealed joints for any signs of wear, cracking, or detachment, especially after significant travel or weather exposure. Reapply if necessary to maintain integrity.
- Storage: Store unopened cartridges in a cool, dry place between 5°C and 25°C. Protect from direct sunlight and frost. Once opened, use the remaining sealant as soon as possible or seal the nozzle tip to prevent premature curing.
