FAQs

Are the Hoka One One Mafate Speed 4 suitable for wide feet?

The Mafate Speed 4 is described as having a regular (medium) width. Runners with significantly wide feet may find them too narrow. It's always best to try them on if possible or consider sizing up.

How do I clean mud off the outsole?

Use a soft brush or a damp cloth to remove mud and debris from the outsole. For stubborn dirt, you can rinse the outsole under cool water, but avoid soaking the entire shoe.

What is the main advantage of the Profly+ midsole?

The Profly+ midsole uses HOKA's new lighter and more responsive foam, offering improved performance, better energy return, and enhanced cushioning for a faster, more comfortable ride.

Can I use these shoes for road running?

While they offer cushioning, these shoes are specifically designed for technical trail running. The aggressive outsole tread is not optimized for pavement and may wear down quickly. Stick to trails for best performance and durability.

What does the 4mm heel drop mean?

A 4mm heel drop means there is a 4mm difference in height between the heel and the forefoot. This is a relatively low drop, promoting a more natural foot strike common in many trail running shoes.

How durable is the jacquard mesh upper?

The single-layer woven jacquard mesh is designed to be breathable and dynamic. While durable for trail running conditions, it's advisable to be mindful of sharp objects that could snag or tear the fabric.

What is the weight of the Hoka One One Mafate Speed 4?

The Hoka One One Mafate Speed 4 weighs 295g (10.4oz).

Troubleshooting

Shoe feels too tight or small

Try loosening the laces. If the issue persists, consider the recommendation to size up.

Traction feels reduced on certain surfaces

Ensure the outsole is free of mud and debris. For significantly reduced performance, the outsole may be worn and require replacement.

Upper feels less supportive than expected

Adjust the lacing to achieve a more secure fit. Ensure the laces are tied firmly.

Debris getting into the shoe

Ensure the layflat gusseted tongue is positioned correctly to block entry points. Consider using gaiters for exceptionally dusty or debris-heavy trails.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Exceptional traction on technical terrain due to Vibram Megagrip and traction lugs.
  • Responsive and lightweight cushioning for improved speed and comfort.
  • Breathable and dynamic fit from the single-layer jacquard mesh upper.
  • Durable construction with protective toe cap and reinforced heel.
  • Smooth transitions facilitated by the early-stage metarocker.

Cons

  • May run small, requiring potential sizing up for an optimal fit.
  • The aggressive outsole tread might wear faster on hard surfaces.
  • Single-layer upper may offer less insulation in very cold conditions.
  • Lighter foam could be less durable for extremely heavy runners compared to denser foams.
