Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Your Mary's Rose arrives as a freshly potted, established plant in a 4-litre pot. It is ready to be planted out into its final position upon arrival. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
- Prepare the Planting Hole: Dig a hole twice the width and depth of the pot.
- Enrich the Soil: Mix some compost or well-rotted manure into the excavated soil.
- Plant the Rose: Gently remove the rose from its pot. Place it in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole, firming the soil gently around the base.
- Water Thoroughly: Water generously after planting to help settle the soil.
Compatibility:
- Sunlight: Prefers a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
- Soil: Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils. Avoid waterlogged areas.
- Companions: Works well in mixed borders with other perennials, shrubs, or smaller plants. It is also an excellent choice for large patio containers filled with good quality potting compost.
Care:
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced rose fertilizer in spring and again in early summer for optimal flowering.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is required due to its naturally tidy habit. In late winter or early spring, remove any dead, damaged, or crossing stems. You can also lightly trim to maintain shape if desired.
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage more blooms and prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production.
