Product Information

Full details

The adidas Handball Spezial is a heritage-inspired trainer designed for adults seeking a blend of vintage aesthetic and everyday comfort. Originally launched in 1979 as an indoor sports shoe, it is now a staple for casual wear, offering superior grip and a classic profile. While the premium suede upper provides a soft, luxurious feel, potential owners should note that suede requires more intentional care to maintain its appearance compared to synthetic or leather materials.

FAQs

Are these shoes true to size?

Yes, the adidas Handball Spezial typically fits true to standard UK sizing for adults.

Can I put these in the washing machine?

No, machine washing can permanently damage the suede material and compromise the structural integrity of the shoe.

Are they suitable for rainy weather?

These trainers feature suede which is sensitive to water. It is not recommended to wear them in heavy rain unless treated with a high-quality protective spray.

How do I maintain the gold foil branding?

Avoid scrubbing the tongue directly with stiff brushes to prevent the gold foil branding from wearing away prematurely.

Are these athletic performance shoes?

While based on a 1979 sports design, they are currently intended for lifestyle and casual use rather than professional athletic performance.

Troubleshooting

Suede looks dull or flat

Use a suede brush to gently lift the nap of the material and restore its texture.

Visible scuffs on the suede

Use a suede eraser to gently buff away surface marks; do not use water as it may worsen the stain.

Gum sole discoloration

Wipe the rubber outsole with a mild soap and water solution using a soft cloth, then dry immediately.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Durable gum rubber outsole offers reliable grip
Timeless design fits well with various casual outfits
Soft suede construction provides a comfortable, broken-in feel
Authentic 1970s heritage aesthetic

Cons

Suede material is sensitive to moisture and staining
Less arch support compared to modern performance running shoes
Requires protective treatment for longevity in wet weather

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure your suede trainers remain in peak condition, consider the following maintenance tips:

Protective Spray: Before wearing them, apply a reputable suede-specific water and stain repellent to protect against light rain and dirt.
Cleaning: Use a specialized suede brush to remove loose dust and dirt after each wear. If deeper cleaning is needed, use a suede-specific eraser or cleaning solution.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade the vibrant red colour over time.
Moisture Control: If the shoes become wet, allow them to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources like radiators to prevent the suede from becoming stiff.
