Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting: Choose a sunny, sheltered spot. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix in some compost. Plant the passion flower, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil. Water thoroughly after planting.
Support: Provide a robust trellis, wires, or netting for the climber to grow on. Train the main stems as they grow.
Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Amend heavy clay soil with grit and organic matter.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water container-grown plants more frequently.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer in spring and summer to encourage flowering and growth.
Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to control size and shape. Remove any dead or weak shoots in late winter or early spring. Harder pruning may be needed every few years to rejuvenate overgrown plants.
Hardiness: Hardy to H4. In very cold areas or for young plants, provide a thick mulch around the base in winter and consider wrapping the main stems with horticultural fleece for extra protection.
