Product Information

Full details

The Fox Defend 3L Water Jacket is designed for adult mountain bikers and trail riders who require robust weather protection in harsh, wet conditions. Its primary benefit is a highly durable, waterproof construction that keeps you dry without sacrificing mobility; however, because it is a heavier, 3-layer performance shell, it may feel bulkier than ultra-lightweight packable windbreakers.

FAQs

Is this jacket truly waterproof or just water-resistant?

This is a 3-layer, fully-taped waterproof jacket designed for heavy rain and demanding wet conditions.

Can I wear this jacket while riding in the summer?

While it is designed for wet conditions, the underarm vents make it more versatile for shoulder-season riding, but it may be too warm for peak summer temperatures.

Will the hood fit over my full-face helmet?

The hood is designed to fit over or under most standard trail helmets; check the fitment of your specific helmet model as full-face helmets vary significantly in size.

How do I clean the jacket after a muddy ride?

Brush off dry mud and wash it using a technical garment cleaner in a front-loading washing machine on a gentle cycle.

What does the 3L in the name stand for?

3L stands for 3-Layer, which refers to the construction consisting of an outer shell, a waterproof breathable membrane, and an inner lining bonded together for maximum protection.

Troubleshooting

Water is soaking into the fabric surface

The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating has worn off; re-apply a DWR treatment spray and allow it to cure according to the product instructions.

Internal condensation buildup

Open the waterproof underarm vents to increase airflow and regulate body temperature during high-exertion riding.

Zipper feels stiff or hard to operate

Ensure the zipper track is free of dried mud or trail debris; clean with a soft brush and, if necessary, use a dedicated zipper lubricant.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Superior waterproof performance in extreme conditions
Reinforced Cordura panels for high-wear resistance
Excellent temperature regulation via underarm vents
Helmet-compatible hood for full-coverage protection
High-quality construction with fully-taped seams

Cons

Heavier feel compared to minimalist rain shells
Limited packability for long-distance storage
Gold colorway is bold and may show dirt more than darker options

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the jacket fits properly, pull on your standard riding base layers before testing the size to ensure you have full range of motion in the shoulders. The hood is designed to fit under most MTB helmets; adjust the tension to ensure it moves with your head while looking around for obstacles.

Care Instructions:

Machine wash on a gentle cycle with cold water.
Use a technical fabric wash to maintain the DWR properties.
Avoid fabric softeners, as they can degrade the waterproof membrane.
Hang dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat sources.
Periodically re-apply a DWR spray if you notice water stopping to bead up on the surface.
