Product Information

Full details

The Saucony Xodus Ultra 4 is a premier trail running shoe engineered for distance runners who require a blend of maximum cushioning and rugged durability. It is ideal for long-haul adventures, ultra-distance racing, and technical terrain, offering exceptional energy return through its signature foam technology. While its high level of protection and support provides confidence on challenging trails, the 309g weight may feel slightly substantial for runners prioritizing pure speed over comfort.

FAQs

Is this shoe suitable for road-to-trail transitions?

Yes, while designed for trails, the cushioning is compliant enough for short road sections, though the outsole will last longer if kept primarily on dirt.

How does the sizing run?

The Xodus Ultra 4 generally fits true to size, but we recommend trying them on with the socks you plan to use for your longest runs.

Does this shoe feature a rock plate?

It utilizes a reinforced structure and a robust chassis system to protect the foot from sharp rocks rather than a rigid, singular plate.

Is it waterproof?

No, the upper is designed for breathability. While it dries quickly, it does not feature a waterproof membrane.

How long should I expect the outsole to last?

The Vibram MegaGrip outsole is highly durable, though lifespan varies based on the harshness of the terrain and your individual foot strike.

Troubleshooting

Foot slipping inside the shoe on descents

Try utilizing the top eyelet (the 'runner's knot') to create a more secure heel lock.

Excessive mud buildup in the lugs

While the 4mm lugs are designed to shed mud, tapping the soles together after a run or using a stiff brush helps clear stubborn debris.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Superior energy return from the PWRRUN PB foam
Excellent, reliable grip provided by Vibram MegaGrip
Balanced 6mm drop suitable for diverse runner types
Durable construction capable of handling high mileage
Enhanced protection for rugged technical terrain

Cons

Heavier than minimalist trail options at 309g
May feel less responsive on extremely fast, flat surfaces
The max-cushion design can reduce ground feel for some runners

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the best fit, use the Xodus Ultra 4 with your preferred technical running socks to manage moisture. If you use custom orthotics, the internal volume is generally accommodating, but verify the fit after removing the stock insole. Following a wet or muddy run, remove the insoles and allow the shoes to air dry away from direct heat sources to preserve the foam's integrity. Clean the outsole lugs with a soft brush to maintain traction, and ensure the upper is wiped down if it has been exposed to salt or grit, which can degrade fabric over time.
