Full details

The YouGarden Viburnum Opulus Roseum, or Snowball Tree, is an ideal choice for gardeners of all skill levels seeking a low-maintenance, high-impact flowering shrub for the UK climate. It provides a stunning display of spherical, white-to-pink blossoms in early summer and vibrant autumn foliage, making it a versatile option for hedging or as a standalone focal point. While these robust shrubs are celebrated for their reliability and RHS Award of Garden Merit status, gardeners should be mindful of their ultimate 4m by 4m size, which requires adequate space to thrive without crowding neighboring plants.

FAQs

When does the Snowball Tree flower?

The Viburnum Opulus ‘Roseum’ typically begins its flowering display in early May.

Can these shrubs grow in pots?

While they can start in pots, their eventual size of 4m by 4m means they will eventually need to be planted in the ground to thrive.

Is this plant frost hardy?

Yes, this variety is fully hardy and well-suited to the UK climate, capable of surviving winter temperatures.

Do I need to prune it every year?

Pruning is recommended after flowering to keep the shrub in shape and encourage new growth, but it is not strictly necessary for the plant's survival.

Will these shrubs produce berries?

No, because the flowers are sterile, the plant does not produce fruit or berries.

Troubleshooting

Slow growth after planting

Ensure the plant is receiving adequate water during its first growing season and check that the soil is not overly compacted.

Flowers turning brown prematurely

This is often caused by late frost or lack of water during a dry period; ensure a consistent watering schedule as buds form.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Upon arrival, your three plants will be in 9cm pots. Before planting, ensure the soil is well-draining.

Preparation: Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and mix in a little compost or organic matter to help the roots establish.
Planting: Place the plant in the hole at the same level it was in the pot, firm in the soil, and water thoroughly.
Watering: During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells in spring and summer.
Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to encourage vigorous growth for the following year. Remove dead or crossing branches to maintain the shape.
Maintenance: Apply a general-purpose fertilizer in early spring to support the massive energy expenditure required for the summer bloom.
