FAQs
Are these shoes suitable for basketball?
While the design is inspired by 80s basketball heritage, the New Balance 950 is a lifestyle shoe and is not designed for competitive court sports.
How does the fit compare to running shoes?
The 950 series features a wider toe box than many performance running models, offering a more relaxed fit in the forefoot area.
Can I use these in the rain?
The leather upper provides some resistance, but it is not waterproof. It is recommended to use a leather-protectant spray to add a layer of water repellency.
Are these unisex?
Yes, the New Balance 950 is designed as a unisex trainer suitable for all adults.
How do I determine my correct size?
These trainers follow standard UK sizing; check your current New Balance shoes for size consistency or refer to a standard size chart for your foot length.
Troubleshooting
Leather feels stiff during first wear
Wear the shoes for short periods indoors to allow the leather to naturally soften and contour to your foot.
Difficulty cleaning white or light beige sections
Use a gentle leather-safe eraser or a damp microfiber cloth with a small amount of mild soap, ensuring you wipe away any residue immediately.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Versatile design suitable for various casual settings
- Durable leather construction
- Accommodating wider toe box for improved comfort
- Classic basketball-inspired aesthetic
Cons
- Leather material may feel stiff initially
- Limited colorway options compared to performance models
- Not intended for high-intensity sports despite the basketball aesthetic
Setup, Compatibility & Care
To ensure your New Balance 950 trainers maintain their condition, follow these care steps:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth or a specialized leather cleaner to remove surface dust. Avoid submerging the leather in water.
- Maintenance: If the leather becomes wet, allow it to air dry at room temperature away from direct heat sources like radiators to prevent cracking.
- Compatibility: These trainers fit true to size for most adults, though the wider toe box may feel more spacious than narrow-fit running models. Use standard cotton or performance socks to maintain breathability.
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry place and use shoe trees if possible to help the leather retain its shape over time.
