Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup
Setting up your Birkenstock Madrid Gold sandals is straightforward:
- Unpack: Remove the sandals from their packaging.
- Adjust the Strap: Before wearing, loosen the metal buckle, slide your foot into the sandal, and then tighten the strap until it feels snug but not uncomfortably tight. Ensure there's enough space to allow natural foot movement without your foot sliding around.
- Break-in Period: Birkenstock sandals are designed to mold to your feet. It's normal for them to feel a little firm initially. Wear them for short periods (1-2 hours) each day for the first week or two to allow the footbed to soften and conform to your unique foot shape. This break-in process is crucial for long-term comfort.
Compatibility
The Birkenstock Madrid Gold is a versatile sandal compatible with a wide range of casual and smart-casual attire. Its classic design and metallic finish make it suitable for:
- Casual Wear: Jeans, shorts, skirts, and summer dresses.
- Beach/Poolside: A stylish option for relaxed settings, though avoid prolonged water submersion.
- Travel: Comfortable for walking around during sightseeing or as a relaxed option after a day of exploring.
Care & Maintenance
Proper care extends the life and maintains the appearance of your sandals:
- Birko-Flor® Upper: To clean the metallic Birko-Flor upper, simply wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners as they can damage the finish.
- Footbed: Gently wipe the suede leather footbed lining with a damp cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a specialized suede brush to remove dirt and restore the nap. Avoid soaking the footbed as this can damage the cork.
- Cork Footbed: Protect the exposed cork edges by periodically applying a thin layer of cork sealant (available from Birkenstock or shoe repair stores). This helps prevent drying and cracking.
- Outsole: The EVA outsole can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
- Drying: If your sandals get wet, allow them to air dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources, which can damage the cork and Birko-Flor.
- Storage: Store your sandals in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or hot cars for extended periods, as this can cause the materials to shrink or crack.
