Full details

The YouGarden Delphinium Delgenius Collection is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to add bold vertical structure to cottage-style borders or large patio containers. This trio features the double-flowered 'Chantay', the vibrant 'Glitzy', and the elegant 'Neva', offering a reliable performance with sturdier stems than traditional varieties. While these plants provide a stunning display from June to July, they require consistent moisture and protection from strong winds to maintain their upright spires.

FAQs

Can I grow these in pots?

Yes, they are suitable for large patio containers provided they have good drainage and consistent water.

Are these plants perennial?

Yes, Delphiniums are perennial and will return year after year if cared for correctly.

Do I need to stake these plants?

The Delgenius series is bred for sturdiness, but in very windy, exposed locations, a small stake may still be beneficial.

When is the best time to plant them?

Planting is best done in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed, allowing roots to establish before the summer heat.

Are they toxic to pets?

Yes, Delphiniums are toxic if ingested, so keep them away from curious pets and children.

Troubleshooting

Plants are leaning or falling over

The plants may be in too exposed an area; install a small support stake and move the pot to a more sheltered location if possible.

Flowers are wilting despite regular watering

Check the soil drainage; while they love moisture, they do not like to sit in waterlogged soil which can cause root issues.

No second flush of flowers

Deadheading must be done promptly after the first flush fades; ensure you are also providing adequate liquid fertilizer to encourage regrowth.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Significantly sturdier stems compared to traditional delphinium varieties
Compact habit makes them easier to manage in smaller garden spaces
Includes three diverse color profiles for immediate border contrast
Attracts beneficial pollinators like bees to the garden
Supplied as established plants for faster establishment

Cons

Requires fertile, consistently moist soil to thrive
Needs a sheltered position to avoid wind damage to tall spires
Limited bloom window compared to long-flowering perennials

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Planting: Choose a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the size of the 9cm pot, add compost, and firm in gently.
Watering: Delphiniums are not drought-tolerant. Ensure the soil remains moist, particularly during dry spells in late spring and early summer.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season to support the heavy development of the flower spikes.
Deadheading: Once the primary flower spike begins to fade, cut it back to the first set of healthy leaves. This keeps the plant tidy and may encourage a second, smaller flush of flowers later in the season.
Support: While Delgenius varieties are sturdier than others, if you live in a particularly exposed area, use a small plant support or stake to keep the spires upright.
