FAQs

What is the primary advantage of GSP backing?

The primary advantage is its high strength-to-diameter ratio, allowing for more backing on your reel and increased capacity.

What kind of knots should I use?

Use secure knots like the Arbor knot for the reel spool and an improved clinch knot or similar for the connection to the fly line.

How often should I inspect the backing?

Inspect the backing regularly, before and after each fishing trip, especially after a fight with a fish.

Is GSP backing suitable for saltwater fishing?

Yes, GSP backing is excellent for saltwater fishing due to its strength and durability.

How do I clean my backing?

Rinse the backing with fresh water after each use to remove salt and debris.

How does the multicolor feature help?

The color changes every 10 meters, aiding anglers in estimating the depth of their fly line and where their fly is in relation to the fish.

What is the diameter compared to Dacron?

RIO GSP has a similar diameter to 20lb Dacron, maximizing your reel's line capacity.

Troubleshooting

Backing slips on the reel spool.

Ensure the Arbor knot is securely tied and tightened. Consider using a small piece of tape on the spool before tying the knot to provide additional grip.

Backing tangles or knots easily.

Ensure you are using the correct knots and that they are tied neatly. Avoid overfilling your reel with backing. Check your rod guides and reel for any sharp edges.

Backing breaks during a fight.

Check the backing for abrasion or damage before use. Ensure all knots are tied correctly. Use a knot strength testing tool to test your knots.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

  1. Reel Compatibility: RIO GSP backing is compatible with most fly reels. Ensure that the backing capacity matches your reel's specifications.
  2. Attaching to the Reel: Securely attach the backing to your reel spool using a strong knot like the Arbor knot. Wet the knot before tightening.
  3. Attaching to Fly Line: Use an appropriate knot, such as an improved clinch knot, to connect the backing to your fly line. Make sure the knot is properly seated and tightened.
  4. Winding the Backing: Wind the backing onto the reel spool evenly, under moderate tension. Avoid overfilling the spool.
  5. Care: Rinse the backing with fresh water after each use to remove salt and debris. Store the reel in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
