Hammerite Direct to Rust Smooth Metal Paint is designed for DIYers and homeowners looking to restore and protect metal surfaces like fences and furniture. Its key benefit is the 2-in-1 formula that acts as both a primer and topcoat, offering up to eight years of rust protection with a durable, smooth glossy finish. One important caveat is that this solvent-based paint is intended primarily for outdoor use, and users must follow strict safety protocols regarding ventilation and skin contact due to its chemical composition.

No, this specific formulation is intended for outdoor use. Always ensure the area is well-ventilated if used in semi-enclosed outdoor spaces.
You should wait at least 4 hours before applying a second coat.
No, the paint is ready-mixed and should not be thinned for standard brush application.
The minimum drying time is 1 hour, with a maximum drying time of 2 hours per coat.
If a test patch reveals a reaction with the existing surface, you must remove all old paint completely before applying the Hammerite paint.
It is suitable for most metal surfaces, but bare zinc, aluminum, and galvanized metals require a specific primer before application.
You have likely over-applied the paint. Use thinner, even coats and ensure the brush or roller is not overloaded.
Ensure the surface was properly cleaned of grease and dust. If applying to zinc or aluminum, verify that a special metals primer was used first.
The initial rust was likely not removed sufficiently, or the edges/corners were missed during application. Perform a thorough cleaning and re-coat.
Before application, proper surface preparation is essential. Begin by using a wire brush to remove any loose rust or flaking paint. Clean the surface thoroughly with diluted detergent, rinse with clean water, and allow it to dry completely. For bare zinc, aluminum, or galvanized surfaces, you must apply a dedicated metal primer before using the Hammerite paint.
After your project, remove as much excess paint as possible from your brushes before cleaning them specifically with Hammerite Brush Cleaner & Thinners. Store the container tightly closed and away from extreme temperatures to maintain the integrity of the remaining product.
