FAQs

Is this jacket warm enough for winter?

This is a shell jacket, meaning it is waterproof and windproof but not insulated. It is designed to be worn over layers to provide warmth.

How do I clean my Birchdale II jacket?

Wash using a gentle cycle with a dedicated technical outdoor gear cleaner. Do not use fabric softeners.

Can I wear this for skiing?

Yes, its waterproof properties and articulated design make it suitable for snow activities, provided you layer correctly underneath for warmth.

Are the pockets waterproof?

The jacket features zipped pockets, but we recommend keeping sensitive electronics in a dry bag inside the pockets for extra security.

Does the hood interfere with visibility?

The hood features adjusters that allow you to cinch it down, maintaining a secure fit that moves with your head, preventing visibility loss.

What does Isotex 15000 mean?

It refers to a high-performance waterproof and breathable membrane that allows moisture vapor to escape while keeping rain out.

Troubleshooting

Water starts soaking into the outer fabric

The DWR finish may be wearing off; wash the garment with a technical cleaner and re-apply a DWR spray treatment.

Condensation building up inside the jacket

Ensure you are using appropriate moisture-wicking base layers and adjust the ventilation by unzipping the main zip slightly if needed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

High level of waterproof and breathability rating
Excellent freedom of movement due to articulated design
Robust construction with water-repellent zips
Highly adjustable features for a personalized, secure fit

Cons

Not an insulated jacket, requires layering for warmth
Requires proper care to maintain waterproof coating
Available only in a shell design

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure the jacket maintains its performance, avoid using harsh detergents that can degrade the waterproof coating. Wash the jacket in cool water with a specialized technical fabric cleaner. To reactivate the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish, it is recommended to tumble dry on a low setting or iron on a low temperature, provided the care label guidelines are followed.

Compatibility-wise, the jacket's shell design makes it highly versatile. It is intended to be worn over technical base layers and mid-layers, ensuring you can adapt to fluctuating temperatures throughout the day by adding or removing clothing underneath.
