Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting:
- Select a location that receives full sun to partial shade.
- Ensure the soil is well-draining. Amend heavy clay soils with compost or grit.
- Dig a hole twice the width of the plant's root ball and to the same depth.
- Gently remove the plant from its container and loosen any circling roots.
- Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
- Backfill the hole with soil and water thoroughly.
Compatibility:
This Heuchera is compatible with a wide range of garden plants, including other perennials, shrubs, and groundcovers. It thrives in average garden soil and does not require specialized companions.
Care:
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering once established.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the crown.
- Fertilizing: Generally not required, but a light feeding in spring with a balanced fertilizer can promote vigorous growth.
- Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged foliage as needed. In spring, remove old leaves to encourage new growth. Plants may be pruned back in late winter or early spring to tidy their appearance and stimulate fresh foliage.
- Pest Control: Monitor for common pests like slugs and snails. Use appropriate deterrents or control methods if necessary.
