Winsor & Newton Galeria Black Gesso is an essential surface primer for artists ranging from students to professionals who require a high-quality, matte-black foundation for their acrylic or oil paintings. It provides a reliable tooth for various media, ensuring excellent adhesion, though users working with oils must apply at least three coats to properly reduce absorbency and maintain film integrity.

It is designed for porous surfaces like canvas, paper, and wood. It may not adhere well to plastics or glass.
Yes, but you must apply at least three coats to ensure the surface is properly sealed.
No, it is formulated to be non-yellowing and archival.
Yes, the textured tooth of the dried gesso is excellent for holding charcoal, graphite, and pastels.
Wash them thoroughly with soap and water immediately after use before the gesso dries.
Yes, you can mix acrylic color into the gesso to tint it, though this will alter the matte black finish.
This usually occurs if the layer is too thick or the surface was contaminated with grease; ensure a thin, even application on a clean, non-oily surface.
Thin the gesso with a small amount of water and apply multiple thin coats rather than one heavy, thick layer.
Apply additional coats of gesso; a minimum of three is required when working with oils to properly seal the surface.
To prepare your surface, ensure the material (canvas, wood, or paper) is clean, dry, and free of any grease or oils. Apply the gesso using a high-quality brush or roller. If the consistency feels too thick, you can thin it slightly with small amounts of water, though be careful not to over-dilute as this can weaken the binder. Once finished, wash your brushes immediately with soap and water while the gesso is still wet, as the dried primer can be difficult to remove from bristles. Store the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place to prevent the fluid from drying out prematurely.
